CHANCE SDN IMPRESSIVELY Kentucky Derby Favorite Shows to-Advantage in Six Furlongs Prep. Chanccview One of Most Improved Horses in Training for the Downs Classic Other Derby Eligibles Work. LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 13 Although weather and track conditions were against them, candidates for the sixty-first Kentucky Derby under preparation at local Churchill Downs, today put on their biggest training show of the season. Headed by the Derby favorite, Chance Sun, five nominees for the coveted race were in action during the morning period of training. The weather was cold and threatening and they found the racing strip heavy and holding. In addition to the J. E. Wide-ner colt, the Derby quintet included J. J. Flanigans Chanceview, Mrs. R. B. Fairbanks Bluebeard, W. E. Hupps Bobbys Son and J. W. Parrishs Jawapa. Showing none of the sluggishness and desire to loaf as in his previous trial at a mile, Chance Sun clicked off three-quarters in 1:19. He was "full of run" and pulled hard throughout in an unsuccessful effort to have his rider loosen his hold on the reins. Accompanied by Silversmith, the Derby choice turned the first quarter in :25, and the half in :52. He was about half a length before his companion at the termination of three-quarters. Horsemen seemed agreed that it was the best Chance Sun has shown since arriving here from Elmendorff Farm. "There is no question," said one of the older and most able trainers here, "that Pete Coyne has him ready to do big, things. Wait until he hits a fast track, I think hell show you plenty." Trainer Tommy Oliphant sent Chanceview a mile and he did just what his trainer wanted. Working under a stout, even pull, he went the quarter in :26, half mile in :53, three-quarters in l:22Vs and the mile in 1:51. This hopeful, dubbed by horsemen and the morning regulars, "the gift horse" and, like the Derby favorite, a son of Chance Shot, is regarded as .one of the most improved horses training for the big event. Bobbys Son rattled off three-quarters in 1:20, handily, while Jawapa breezed four furlongs in :57, and Bluebeard, opening up for a longer workout Sunday, hurried over three furlongs in :36Ss. Bartering Kate started out with the latter Fairbanks candidate, but was unable to keep pace with him. He traversed the first two furlongs in :2-i and was never fully extended. A. B. Gordon, with the, C. B. Shaffer and E. D. Shaffer Derby colts, Finance and St. Bernard, was expected to reach the Downs from Coldstream Farm late Saturday afternoon. Arrival of these sons of Bulldog should add much interest to Derby training activities here the next three weeks.
