THREE-YEAR-OLD PROSPECTS OF 1936 1 NED REIGH, Brown Colt, by Neddie Reign Nan; Property of W. S. ; Kilmer, Possesses All the Qualifications Necessary to Capture the Kentucky Derby and Other Three-Year-Old Fixtures. See Kentucky Derby Book for Past Performances. By NOBRIS HOYDEN. j Willis Sharpe Kilmer has in Ned Reigh one of the finest prospects of a healthy three-year-old crop. This son of Neddie and Reigh Nun, by Sunreigh, retired last fall with a fine record of achievements, one that establishes him as a leading contender for honors this season. Right now he is regarded as one of the foremost candidates for the Kentucky Derby. Ned Reigh could be had for ,500 out of the Troy Claiming Stakes at Saratoga last summer, and many were the horsemen who recalled too late that he had demonstrated considerable ability in his previous start, which was in the Flash Stakes. That was the only time Ned Reigh was risked in a claiming race, before and after, he met the best of his age as they came along. At the windup of the season, the Kilmer colt had to his credit triumphs in the Walden Handicap, Junior Champion Stakes, Babylon Handicap and the Troy, and third places in the Pimlico Futurity and Spalding Lowe Jenkins Handicap. Grand Slam was the only other two-year-old capturing four stakes during the season. The son of Neddie made his debut in April at Pimlico, showing nothing. More than a month later in a race won by Snark with Jean Bart second, he again ran far back. In his third effort, which took place at Narragansett Park, Ned Reigh finished second in a dash of five furlongs to Seabiscuit, while such as Tugboat Frank and Challephen followed him home. After taking third behind Excite and Lt. Greenock in a maiden event at Suffolk Downs, Ned Reigh graduated at the same course, easily defeating a field of fair youngsters. He then was taken to Saratoga where, on opening day in the Flash Stakes, he displayed a capable effort in running fifth behind Red Rain, Delphinium and Postage Due. The Troy Claiming Stakes followed, and Ned Reigh, carrying 120 pounds, dominated his opposition to win going away by a length and a half over Conquer, with Dark Wizard third. Then in the Sanford Stakes which, like the Troy, was decided over an off track, he closed steadily through the stretch until caught in a head and nose finish, which found him in sixth place, but only a length back of the victorious Crossbow H. Bow to Me was second, Sangreal third, Delphinium fourth and Snark fifth in the Sanford, all in a bunch. At Aqueduct, the son of Neddie scored a pair of splendid victories in the Babylon Handicap at six furlongs, and the Junior Champion at six and one-half furlongs. In the former event, he nosed out Speed to Spare, with Granville third, and in the latter he won over The Fighter, Pullman, Teufel and other good youngsters, coming from behind the pace in both instances. He was shipped to Havre de Grace, for the Eastern Shore Handicap, but failed to be a factor. Returning to Belmont Park, Ned Reigh took third honors in the Nursery Handicap as Coldstream won, with Crossbow U. getting the place; and in the Futurity he was never able to approach the first division. At Laurel, in the Spalding Lowe Jenkins at one mile, the Neddie colt came through with a creditable performance to land third honors to Memory Book and Maeriel, and in the Pimlico Futurity at a mile and one-sixteenth, Hollyrood and Grand Slam beat him home over a dull track as he easily outfinished Jean Bart, Snark, Bright Plumage and others. A muddy track prevailed for the Walden, which Ned Reigh found to his liking and, under top weght of 116 pounds, he came from behind the pace to win by a half length over Challepfien, with Wise Duke third and Memory Book. The half-dozen others behind him included He Did and other fair performers. He loomed a strong favorite for the Endurance Handicap but was declared out when Wayne Wright was unable to ride him because of being suspended, and was retired to his owners farm in Virginia. Ned Reigh demonstrated in his two-year-old racing that he was not a sprinter, although his sire, a son of Colin, was noted as a speedster. Through his dam he traces to Sunreigh, the brother to Sun Briar and sire of Reigh Count, and to Friar Rock, Neil Gow and other stout horses. He also gets staying blood through his sires dam, a daughter of Light Brigade. Ned Reigh has the requisites to be a good three-year-old. f Doming....
