WEE SANTA stumbled in the first few strides, but recovered quickly and, getting to the front of STOLEN COLOR rounding the first turn, was taken under slight restraint to have enough to hold the latter in the stretch and won easily. STOLEN COLOR had no excuses and could not get to the winner again after being headed. ONUS met with interference when WEE SANTA stumbled after the start and dropped far out of it in the first half mile, but came strongly in the stretch. SIR ROSE tired in the run home. DARK WINTER acted badly at the post and was started from the outside. He broke fairly well and although forced to race on the outside while making his move, gained steadily to challenge SLAPPED in the stretch and win in a drive. SLAPPED, although meeting with slight interference around the first turn, was close to BAHAMAS in the run down the back stretch and headed the latter after turning for home but could not resist the winner. BAHAMAS showed speed from the start and opened up a good lead while making the pace, but tired in the final eighth. AMERICAN EMBLEM showed improvement and although racing wide, was going well at the finish. BOILING POINT tired. The others could not keep up. Scratched 24519 Stavka, 111; 24260 Velociter, 101. FORT SPRINGS lacked early speed and dropped far back of the leaders in the early part, but came very fast on the outside in the last quarter to get to the front nearing the end and won going away. R. D. POWERS displayed fine early speed, continued gamely after being headed by CLOUD DOR and, fouled by the latter at midstretch, got up in the closing strides to take second place. CLOUD DOR, close to the pace from the start, crossed to the rail to shut off R. D. POWERS and took a good lead entering the final eighth but tired near the end and failed to save second place when his jockey stopped Tiding before the finish. GREAT LOVER dropped back after breaking well but came again in the stretch. CLEAN OUT tired. BEHEMOTH went to the front soon after the start to take a long lead around the first two turns and, given a breathing spell, had enough left to win easily. MERRY GO ROUND was hard ridden to hold BALLYHOO in the last eighth. The latter came fast when called upon after leaving the back stretch and went fairly well under hard riding to the finish.
