ARLINGTON DOWNS NOTES g- $ John Deering has been engaged to ride B. Hernandez Flag Cadet in the Texas Derby. Anthony Ortell, widely known newspaperman, will leave for St. Louis tomorrow night for a short visit and then will go to Louis- i i ville for the Kentucky Derby. E. F. Woodward, owner of Valdina Farms at Sabinal, Texas, reports eight foals during the past two weeks. They are sons and daughters of The Porter, Chance Shot, Flying Ebony, Bagenbaggage and Portmanteau. R. Fisher was permitted to withdraw Playaway from the first race Wednesday on account of the illness of his wife. Several handicap stars had useful prepara tions at Arlington Downs Wednesday morning. Marynell, winner of the Frontier Exposition Handicap, went a handy mile in 1:44. Sarada turned the same distance in 1:4316, and Whiskolo stepped five furlongs in 1:05. They probably will be under colors in the Roman Soldier Handicap, which supports Saturdays renewal of the Texas Derby.
