AZUCAR CARRIES TOP WEIGHT Ex-Steeplechaser Is Assigned 121 Pounds for ,000 Fashion Stakes. Indian Broom Sulks in Five-Eighths Workout at Bay Meadows Opening Day Handle Disappoints. SAN MATEO, Calif., April 15. Azucar, which ran a smashing race back of Indian Broom and Top Row in the Marchbank Handicap, picks up top weight in the ,000 added Fashion Stakes, to be run as Saturdays feature at Bay Meadows. The old sugar horse is deemed eight pounds better than the second highweight in the running of the mile and seventy yards race. He will have 121 pounds on his back against 113 on Slapped and 112 on Dark Winter. While the distance of the Fashion Stake3 may be just a trifle short for. Azucar, which was badly outrun for the first seven furlongs in the Marchbank, he may have enough strength to catch his field in the stretch and romp to victory. Weight does not bother Azucar much. He got used to packing poundage, while racing through the field. Azucar will have help in the Fashion Stakes, as he will have Dark Winter as a running companion. Dark Winter performed well in his initial appearance of the season at Bay Meadows. Jovius, which performed creditably in the Marchbank Handicap, is in the Fashion with 109 pounds, and the weights then range down to 95 pounds on Velociter. Following are the weights: Azucar, 121; Slapped, 113; Dark Winter, 112; Jovius, 109; Cloud DOr, 107; Arson, 107; Bahamas, 105; Coldwater, 102; Mickeys Man, 100; Marcabala, 98; Nubs, 98, and Velociter, 95. Indian Broom seems to be getting temperamental since his smashing victory in the Marchbank. The son of Brooms, which will soon go eastward to take part in the Kentucky Derby, sulked in his regular workout Wednesday morning. Trainer Cannon sent him out to go five furlongs, and it took him 1:04 to run the distance. Indian Broom has previously sulked in some workouts, but never in a race, so Cannon is of the opinion that it is just a training habit. Indian Brooms sulking may be caused by his exercise boys attempt to restrain him. Students of blood lines point out that in Indian Brooms breeding there is ample reason for sulking habits to develop.. The Donnacona blood in his dam has been revealed in numerous horses with surly behavior while Broomstick, sire of Brooms, Indian Brooms "papa," got quite a few horses which were not of even temperament, including Whiskery and Whippet. Cannon is going ahead with preparations to send Indian Broom East for the Kentucky Derby and the colt will have much financial backing from the western turfmen. Major Austin C. Taylor, Indian Brooms owner, departed for Vancouver yesterday to wind up a few business affairs before returning to Tan-foran to join trainer Cannon, jockey George Burns and Indian Broom in the trip to Churchill Downs. Another young man who will be on hand at the famous Kentucky track when the bugle calls the horses to the post for the famous Derby is jockey Lester Balaski. The boy left yesterday for his home in New Orleans to visit his folks before reporting to E. R. Bradley at Louisville. Balaski will have the mount on either Bien Joli or Bannister in the Kentucky Derby. The handle at Bay Meadows on opening day was rather disappointing. It was thought that the 50,000 mark would be reached during the day, but the business ran to but 35,077. A good sized crowd was present and the weather, which was a trifle cool in the morning, turned out to be pleasant. The races Tuesday were concluded earlier than at Tanforan as general manager Bill Kyne of Bay Meadows is anxious to have his patrons leave the track in time to reach the city by about 6 p. m. H. B. Thomas has taken over the training of Toro Blue and Only Daughter for the Dralicia Stable.
