BELAIR STUDS GRANVILLE i WORKS MILE IN 1:42 I i ; NEW YORK, N. Y., April 15. Wednesday was an off day for the local candidates named for the Wood Memorial, Kentucky Derby and other stakes. Granville and Merry Pete owned by the Belair Stud, were called upon for a mile trial over the Aqueduct course and over a track that was drenched by early morning rains were timed a mile in 1:42. Granville was under stout restraint throughout while Merry Pete was under pressure to keep up with his stable companion. Trainer Fitzsimmons was pleased with the test and stated that barring accidents, Granville would start in the Wood Memorial. His future campaign depended upon his showing in that race. The two broke together on the back stretch and raced along under snug restraint. The first half mile was timed in :48 seconds while the six furlongs was covered in 1:16. At this point Merry Pete began to feel the effects of the trial and was put under pressure. However, Granville was racing along smoothly and at the end was well in hand. The final time was 1:42. Bold Venture, M. L. Schwartz candidate, was breezed four furlongs over the main track at Belmont. This was a pipe opener for a longer trial in public at Jamaica Thursday and the colt flashed good speed. He was timed in :48 seconds. Trainer Hirsch said that the colt is in prime condition. Red Rain, C. V. Whitneys chief contender for the Belmont Stakes, the outstanding three-year-old fixture of the Westchester Racing Association, was called upon for a mile breeze. He was accompanied by Tatterdemalion and the two were under snug restraint throughout. The final time was 1:51. Trainer Healey is bringing his charge along at a steady pace and the Hopeful winner will be seen under colors once or twice before the running of the Belmont Stakes.
