I LEXINGTON SALESPROGRESSING Fourth and Fifth Sessions Bring Varied Prices, With ,700 Top. Supremus Goes to Sanford Stud Farms After Spirited Bidding Valdina Farms Acquire Rippling Star. LEXINGTON, Ky., Oct. 21. Tuesday evening at E. J. Tranters Lexington sales paddock marked the second period of this weeks auction of thoroughbred yearlings. Seventy-four brought an aggregate of 7,850, an average of 46.62. The offerings were not so good as on Monday evening, as is reflected in the decreased average. The principal consignment was that of Thomas Piatt, master of Brookdale Farm, of Lexington, his twenty-one head bringing 6,425, an average of 82.14. The top of the evenings vendue came out of this consignment when Warren Wright, master of Calumet Farm, bought the bay colt by Bostonian Elizabeth W., by Upset, for ,600. Mr. Wright recently acquired Bostonian for Calumet Farm, buying him from Alex B. Gordon, who had for several years kept him at Mr. Piatts, farm. Thomas Carr Piatt, son of Thomas Piatt, sold eight from his Crestwood Farm for ,800, an average of 00. The second-highest price of the evening was brought by the chestnut colt by American Flag, from Luminous, by Luke McLuke, which was bred in partnership by E. P. Eastin of Lexington and J. Howard Lewis of Elkins Park, Pa. W. Arnold Hanger took him for ,300. From Shandon Farm, owned by P. A. and R. J. Nash, came eleven head which were sold for a total of ,175, an average of 79.55. The third-highest price of the evening was obtained by Joe H. Gaines of Georgetown, Ky., for the chestnut colt by Chance Shot Penny Pan, by Peter Pan. Roscoe Goose bought him for ,700. This colt was at Saratoga, where- he was sold to divide the partnership of J. E. Widener and J. H. Gaines, the latter having bought him there for ,850. J. B. Respess averaged 50 for the nine yearlings from his Highland Stock Farm at Erlanger, Ky., which brought an aggregate of ,950. The following horses brought ,000 or more each: Property of Thomas Piatt: Bay colt, 1935, by Bostonian Elizabeth W.; Calumet Farm ,600 Black filly, 1935, by Bostonian Grey Watch; Valdina Farms 2,500 Property of Joseph II. Hanger ,300 LEXINGTON, Ky., Oct. 21. The third morning of E. J. Tranters auction of thoroughbred horses at the Lexington sales paddock brought another good market for breeding stock. Sixty-nine head of stallions, brood mares and weanlings brought an aggregate of 7,950, an average of 39.86. The highest price of the morning was ,700, for Rippling Star, a beautiful daughter of the French horse, Asterus from Ondulation, by Sweeper, which was bought by E. F. Woodward for his Valdina Farms at Houston. Texas. She was the property of William Woodwards. Belair Stud and he entered her in the ring under a reserve of ,500. Mr. Woodward had a like reserve on Bay Bonnie, a daughter of Ambassador IV., which came in immediately preceding Rippling Star, but there was no advance and she went back to Belair Stud. Next after Rippling Star, Supremus, "fourteen-year-old son of Ultimus, was led in as the first of the offerings from Hal Price Headleys Beaumont Farm, and he, after very spirited bidding in which Thomas B. Cromwell, for a western client; John Anhut, owner of Imperial Farms, Detroit, Mich.; Howard Oots, owner of Fayette Farm. Lexington; Thomas Piatt, owner of Brookdale Farm, Lexington; R. W. Mcllvain. who is reestablishing the old Montclair Farm at Lexington, and Hollie Hughes, representing Sanford Stud Farms, Amsterdam, N. Y., was knocked down to Mr. Hughes bid of ,100. The fifteen head from Beaumont Farm brought 4,950, an average of 96.67. The third highest price of the morning was ,600, paid by Warner Jones of Louisville for Lambling, by Solario Lamb Mint, which was the top of the consignment of John Hay Whitneys Llangollen Stables, the seven head bringing a total of ,375. Mrs. Payne Whitneys Greentree Farm sent in eight head which sold for ,675. The following horses brought ,000 or more each: Property of W. R. Coe and Dr. D. B.
