HEELFLY IMPRESSIVELY Covers Mile and a Quarter in 2:1215 Over Muddy Churchill Track. Sceneshifter Goes Mile and an Eighth in 2:04, Breezing Grey Gold Attracts Much Attention. LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 29. A standout workout by the Texas-owned Heelfly, and trials and gallops, long and short, by virtually every other Kentucky Derby candidate on the grounds, marked the training period at Churchill Downs, the scene of the 0,000 special for three-year-olds on May 8, this morning. Heelfly, owned by the masters of the Three Ds Stock Farm, E. Paul and Guy L. Waggoner, sounded a note of warning that he might be heard from over a muddy or tough track in a near-sensational performance over a muddy course this morning. He worked the full Derby distance of a mile and a quarter in 2:12J4, and he went most handily all the way. Although Heelflys effort commanded chief attention, visitors also evinced interest in the long gallops indulged in by the trio of eastern Derby hopes which arrived from Maryland yesterday, the Glen Riddle Farms War Admiral, virtual equal choice for the big race with J. H. Louchheims Pom-joon; Townsend B. Martins Court Scandal, and W. M. Dupont, Jr.s Fairy Hill. DERBY COLTS IN ACTION. Among other Derby eligibles seen in action this morning were Col. H. Maxwell Howards Sceneshifter, Mrs. Ethel V. Mars Reaping Reward and Military; Mrs. W. H. Fursts Gerald; L J. Collins Bernard F.; E. W. Duffys Grey Gold; J. W. Parrishs Dellor; Miss Mary Hirschs No Sir; H. C. Applegates Chigre; Raoul Walshs Sunset Trail II., and H. H. Cross Teddy Green. The effort of Heelfly was the best yet displayed by a Derby candidate here, and the manner in which he went through his trial was particularly pleasing to his trainer, J. R. Pryce. Heelfly worked unaccompanied and displayed a real eagerness to run when he went his first quarter in :26, and the half mile in :52K. The three-quarters was accomplished in 1:18, and then he went to the mile in 1:45. For the mile and a furlong "he was timed in 1:58, and, as already stated, 2:124 for the mile and a quarter. COMMENT ON WORKOUT. The workout was widely commented upon by horsemen who saw the colts trial, and it was generally agreed that those considering his chances in the Derby might do well to disregard several of his poor races. Heel--fly, according to his trainer, is acting much better than he did at Arlington Downs, which i3 the colts home and on his latest workout and on his best races must be considered a definite threat in the big race a, week from Saturday. Jockey W. D. Wright has been engaged to ride Heelfly in the Derby and so will be in capable hands. Sceneshifter was not asked to show much speed this morning, for he was only breezing to travel a mile and a furlong in 2:04. The Howard three-year-old traversed the first quarter in the soft footing in :27, the half mile in :54, the three-quarters in 1:22, and the mile in 1:51. War Admiral, Court Scandal and Fairy Hill showed no ill effects from their trip Continued on twenty-third page. HEELFLY . IMPRESSIVELY Continued from first page. here Irom Maryland in their gallops around the track. War Admiral, winner of the Chesapeake Stakes, of course, drew the most attention from observers, who now are eager to see him in an actual workout. Another to attract much attention this morning was E. W. Duffys Grey Gold, which distinguished himself at Keeneland by defeating a band of Derby eligibles, including the E. R. Bradley pair, Brooklyn and Billionaire. Grey Gold breezed a half mile through the mud in :56, the quarter in :27, while another recent arrival from Lexington, J. W. Parrishs Dellor, went a handy three furlongs in company of Proph in :36. Reaping Reward, considered .the best of the Milky Way Farm stable, traveled three furlongs with Nations Taste in :39, the quarter in :26, while Military, which may be his running mate in the Derby, galloped a mile and one-half. Although trainer Robert McGarvey plans to start both of his Derby hopes before the big race, one of them may be a contestant in the Indian Hills Purse Saturday and the other in the mile Derby Trial Purse Tuesday. Originally it was McGarveys intention to start both of them Saturday, the first day of the local meeting. Miss Hirsch sent No Sir a half mile with his regular exercising companion, Charmed Circle, in :51, their time for half the distance being :25, while Bernard F. breezed a similar distance in :57?and. Gerald reeled off three furlongs in :37 in handy fashion and, like many other of the Derby horses was "opened up" for something more ambitious later. Teddy Green, only lately considered among the possible starters, breezed a slow five furlongs In 1:10, while once more Sunset Trail ILs exercise was confined to a long gallop. George Walsh, trainer of the Irish-bred three-year-old, plans to work his horse tomorrow if the condition of the track improves, and he said this morning that whether he starts the California racer before the Derby also depends upon the condition of tne looting.
