P0MP00N GOES IN WOOD MEMORIAL ON SATURDAY OUTSTANDING CHOICE Futurity Winner Sure to Rule Favorite for 0,000 Added Race. Expect Field of Twelve to Start- Clodion May Be Most Danger ous Rival of Louchheim Racer.. NEW YORK, N. Y., April 29. There Is a probability that as many as a dozen of tha eligibles for the Wood Memorial will be under silks for Saturdays running. It is the first time this mile and seventy yards prize for three-year-olds has had such a value as 0,000 added, and that will induce the starting of some eligibles that would not keep the engagement but for the value. Of course, Jerome H. Louchheims Pom-poon, favorite for the Kentucky Derby, is choice of the field. Since his brilliant victory in the Paumonok the opening day of the New York season the son of Pompey and Oonagh has been going along exceedingly well, and some gallops over a distance of ground have pretty well convinced that he is more than a sprinter. As a matter of fact, the Louchheim colt seems to stand out to a degree over those that will be seen in the Wood, for most of his apparently most dangerous rivals are already in Kentucky making ready for the Derby to be run a week after the Jamaica prize. PROSPECTIVE CONTESTANTS. Walter A. Carters Clodion, which gave a good account of himself in his only Jamaica start, may be the most dangerous rival of the Futurity winner. Others that are probable starters are Sir Damion, Rudie, which qualified in his most recent effort, Chicolo-rado. Flying Scot, Mosawtre, No Dice, Merry Maker, Gurkha, and Melodist. Each one of these had had some seasoning by racing and while not one of them begins to measure up to Pompoon, taking a line through his Paumonok, it may so happen that one or other of them might run him down in a mile and seventy yards. That is the reason for sending some of those named after the son of Pompey. Unfortunately, the continued rains prevented all the training for the Wood that had been contemplated, but the training has been completed and those that have been named as the probable field appear to be ready. DOUBLE IMPORTANCE. The Wood Memorial has a double importance, for besides its value it will decide whether or not some of the starters are sent to Kentucky for the Derby. A good race in the Wood means a shot at the 0,000 of the Kentucky classic, just as a bad race would mean staying at home. Various of the trainers are still in some measure of doubt as to the quality of their horses, and that quality is only definitely shown in actual racing. That applies to Marshall Fields Sir Damion. He has fooled George Odom to some extent and unless he shows more than has been revealed thus far all thoughts of the Kentucky Derby will be abandoned. Chicolorado earned his way to the Wood by his greatly improved racing this year and while he had not been considered as a Kentucky Derby possibility, a good race at Jamaica tomorrow would mean that he would go to Kentucky. Mosawtre is one that has come to himself and the Wood will declare whether or not he has Derby quality.
