1TO WEST COAST FUTURITIES Tanforan and Bay Meadows Two-Year-Old Features Each Have 0,000 in Added Money. SAN BRUNO, Calif., April 19. Two of the outstanding turf events on the 1938 calendar in the West will be the Tanforan Futurity and the Bay Meadows Futurity, each endowed with 0,000 in added money. These stakes, fashioned for two-year-lds, at a mile, are open to the whole world with no restrictions as to foaling place. Nominations to the Bay Meadows Futurity of 1938 will close September 15 of this year. It is open to yearling3. The Bay Meadows Futurity of 1939 will close at the same time and cucklings will be eligible. The Tanforan Futurity of 1938 closed last August. The Tanforan Futurity of 1939 will close August 1C o this year. The two baby features will be run in the fall. It is expected that each Futurity will be material in establishing the two-year-old champion of the year. TWO SPECIALS. The institution of these two specials will provide an additional incentive for eastern and Kentucky breeders to ship west in the fall. The principal purpose of a Futurity is, to encourage breeding, and the Futurity has long been considered the most-sporting type of race in America. The Belmont Futurity is an outstanding classic and one of the most sought-after events on the turf. Floyd McKenney, presiding steward at Tanforan and an authority on breeding, has been largely responsible for the inauguration of the Tanforan Futurity and the Bay Meadows Futurity. He is of the opinion that quite a number of the colts and fillies com- 1 peting in the two colorful races will be kept in California for breeding purposes after j they have left the race course.
