RECORD FIELD IN ENGLAND Special Correspondence. NEWMARKET, England. At the recent Newbury spring meeting, fifty-one started in the Bechampton Plate, a maiden two-year-old event, This was a record field for a flat race. In the same race in 1935, there were forty-nine runners. Record fields under National Hunt and Steeplechase Rules is sixty-five starters in the Grand National of 1929. The total number of starters on the first day of the Newbury Spring meeting, 138 in six races, was also a record. The previous mark was 129 In seven races at Newbury in 1910. The record field for the Bechampton Plate referred to was dispatched from the Australian barrier, and a photo of the start .showed it to be an even break. An unnamed Irish-bred colt by Warden of the Marches, from Orris, by Only, sporting the "silks of G.W. Hands, was the winner.
