18 IN FITZSIMMONS STRING Veterans Stable Reaches Hialeah in George Tappens Care. Saratoga Stable Sends Volitant to Florida Course Derby-Preakness-Belmont Candidate. MIAMI, Fla., Nov. 8. Eighteen horses trained by the noted conditioner, James Fitz-simmons, have joined Hialeahs thoroughbred colony for the meeting that -will begin January 11 and end March 4 with the 0,000 added Widener Challenge Cup. These thoroughbreds came on from Aqueduct, Long Island, in charge of George Tap-pen, Fitzsimmons chief lieutenant, and they are the property of Wm. Woodward, chairman of The Jockey Club, and Mrs. Henry Carnegie Phipps, of New York. The Belair Stud and Wheatley Stable, the racing names of Mr. Woodward and Mrs. Phipps, respectively, are regular Hialeah campaigners. Another New Yox-k shipment was that of A. J. Goldsborough, who brought a stable of horses for George H. Bull and John A. Morris, president and secretary-treasurer of the Saratoga Association, respectively, and C. H. Thieriot, SARATOGA STABLE FORTUNATE. The Saratoga Stable is fortunate in having the two-year-old Volitant to aim at the principal stakes of the 1939 season, particularly the 0,000 added Flamingo Stakes, the ,000 added Hialeah Stakes and ,000 added Bahamas Handicap, three-year-old features of Joseph E. Wideners forty-six day meeting. The ultimate goal of the powerful son of Display and Flighty Anna will be the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes. Volitant has earned the right to be classed among the leading two-year-olds of the year. He was the only colt to give the unbeaten El Chico a tussle, and that was in the Junior Champion at Aqueduct in the fall when he was beaten by a scant margin for the 0,000 purse. Others in the Goldsborough menage are Persuasive, two-year-old bay colt belonging to the Saratoga Stable, and Ebony Fly, two-year-old filly, and Pallee, three-year-old bay colt, property of Thieriot.
