DRAW DIVISIONS FROM HAT Greentree Campaigners Split Be- tveen Trainers by Lot. John Gaver Gets Hialeah Park Assignment and Stable of Twenty-Eight Training Satisfactorily. MIAMI, Fla., Dec. 29. Drawing horses out of a hat! Departing from the old custom of reserving the best material for her first division and the less promising racers for her second division, Mrs. Payne Whitney, Americas "first lady of the turf" now literally applies the "hat system" to divide her extensive stable for racing in the care of her trainers, John Gaver and Bill Brenrian. There is no way to determine beforehand which of the two trainers for the famous owner of the Greentree Stable will wind up with the-stronger division, as the "drawing by lot" system comprises the ultimate stable of horses to be handled by each. The names of all of Mrs. Whitneys fashionably-bred thoroughbreds are placed in a hat, and then Brennan and Gaver pick one out at a time. This novel and fascinating system readily shows the absence of favoritism, for each trainer depends wholly upon the . luck of the draw. Gaver is now at Hialeah Park with twenty-eight members of Mrs. Whitneys string, considered one of the strongest to represent the Greentree Stable in winter racing history in this celebrated land of sunshine. Moreover, Gavers charges, now training satisfactorily I with the January 11 to March 4 meeting in view, were drawn out of the hat, so to speak, Including the yearlings which will become of racing age on January 1. WELL FORTIFIED. The division is solidly fortified with quality, not only in younger material, but also in older racers like Brush Hook, Eli Yale, j i Drowsy, Redbreast, Armor Bearer, Birthday and Perfect Peace. Also, Gaver has in his care Hash, Third Degree, Day Off, Roll and Toss, Cherry Jam, Slave Song and Test, all of which made their marks as juveniles this season and hold the highest promise of improving still further as three-year-olds during Hialeah Parks colorful meeting. To be sure, Gaver has made a number of nominations for the 0,000 Widener Challenge Cup Handicap, the 0,000 Flamingo and the other handsomely-endowed stakes that promise to make turf history again at Americas most beautiful course. The Greentree nominees for the Widener are Armor Bearer, Hash, Redbreast and Roll and Toss. .For the three-year-old Flamingo prize the Greentree establishment has Cherry Jam, Day Off, Hash, Roll and Toss and Third Degree. The Flamingo is scheduled for February 25, at a mile and one furlong, and the Widener for March 4, at a mile and one-quarter.
