HOMEBREDS TO CLASH California Breeders Champion Stakes to. Be Run Saturday. Field of Twelve Predicted for Mile Opening-Day Feature at Santa Anita Course. ARCADIA, Calif., Dec. 29 Officials of the Los Angeles Turf Club expect an even dozen of the best California-bred two-year-olds to go postward in the California Breeders Champion Stakes, annual top home bred prize of the season, which will be decided at Santa Anita Saturday. The consensus of opinion about the racing secretarys office was that the following would make up the field: Smoky Snyder, Dunfrese, Plucky Flight, Playful Wing, Ardrigh, Toro Play, Iron Bunker, Morning Breeze, Dear Diary, Valley Lass, Hasten Henry, Shasta Fitz and Nikta. The youngsters are asked to go one mile, which will be quite some distance for those which have not as yet traversed the once-around. Some of the candidates are good sprinters, but their ability to "marathon" remains a question. The dockers consensus is the McCarthy entry, which includes Dear Diary and Morning Breeze, both sons of Tick On; Valley Lass, a sprinter of parts, and the Norman Church entry of Plucky Flight and Playful Wink. PLUCKY FLIGHT DANGEROUS. Plucky Flight looms as one of the most dangerous horses in the race despite the fact that he has started but twice. He beat a good field with consummate ease in the North and impressed greatly. Being by Plucky Play, dubbed the "giant killer" many years ago, he should go on. Playful Wink will give him adequate support. Although seeming to lack the verve of the latter on the past performance records, Playful Wink has worked on equal terms with Plucky Flight on occasions. Valley Lass is sure to draw considerable support inasmuch as she was regarded another Brown Jade during the summer. The filly has been rested and is ready for the test. It is probable that W. E. Boeing, who nominated four horses for the event, will start but two, Dunfrese and Nikta. Both have possibilities and should we be called upon to make book we would hang up rather enticing odds. DEAR DIARY CHANGED. Dear Diary and Morning Breeze, the McCarthy entry will be in there battling it out. They form a tough combination. Many Santa Anita patrons who became disgusted with Dear Diary when she persisted in running close up and not winning in such an aggravating finish last winter will note a different filly. The youngster seems cut out for a distance runner. Morning Breeze will likely carry the early pace along extremely well. Smoky Snyder, from the surprisingly successful stable of the ex-San Diego fire chief Louis Almgren, cannot be considered an outsider in the affair. Harry Isenberg reports that Iron Bunker is in good condition and that same gentleman who won this event last year with Iron Hills is out to repeat. Hasten Henry, from the stable of Henry Potter Russell, California horse racing commissioner, will have enough followers and could take it all. The son of Dazzler is a good stretch runner and that is what will count in the final analysis. And they do say that Ardrigh, Toro Play and Shasta Fitz arc not to be neglected either.
