CHAMBERLAINS APPEASEMENT? LONDON, England, Dec. 30. Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain will steer straight ahead on his policy of European "appeasement" when he goes to Rome in January, one of the highest British government authorities said today. Therefore, hopes in Catholic circles that Chamberlain and Pope Pius might initiate a move for a world bloc against totalitarian paganism are doomed to disappointment. Chamberlain and Viscount Halifax, British foreign secretary, are scheduled to see the pope on January 13. Although the visit is described as purely one of courtesy, the Britons undoubtedly will review with the pope and Cardinal Pacelli, papal secretary of state, the European and world situation. The British prime minister, according to the government source, will reiterate that Britain fully subscribes to the popes pleas for peace and views with equal horror the totalitarian campaigns against religions.
