HIRSCH LEARNS HIS LESSON Prepared Ciencias Entry for Derby, Then Deposited it in a Safe Place His Coat Pocket. LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 10. The chances are that the next time the veteran horseman, Max Hirsch, has a letter to mail he will carry it in his hand until he has dropped it into the nearest mail box. He neglected to do this some time ago with an important piece of correspondence and as a result the King Ranchs good filly Ciencia, winner of the Santa Anita Derby, cannot start in the 0,-000 added Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs May 6. Hirsch, according to a story brought from California, carefully filled out Ciencias Kentucky Derby nomination, sealed it in an envelope addressed to Churchill Downs and then he just as carefully deposited it in his coat pocket. This happened several days before entries for the Kentucky race closed on February 15, and when the daughter of Cohort wen the Santa Anita Derby on February 22, Hirsch and his son, "Buddy," who trains her, thought they had every reason to be jubilant over their foresight in making her eligible for the Churchill Downs classic. The painful awakening came some time later when Hirsch discovered the envelope containing Ciencias Derby nomination still tucked away in the innermost recesses of his cloak. And, of course, Kentucky Derby nominations had closed, leaving Hirsch with only an object lesson to ameliorate his ire.
