LEADS AMERICAN RIDERS r JOCKEY L LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 10. Apprentice John E. Oros, who currently is heading the list of American riders, will come west from Maryland to ride at Churchill Downs during the meeting opening April 29. Oroswho is under contract to his uncle, Louis Matyas, Jr., is now attached to the stable of Mrs. Harold Sherman, who leased his services for one month starting with the opening of the Maryland season. Upon arriving here he will report back to Matyas, whose stable is trained by the boys father, John Oros, Aurora horseman. The Oros-Matyas horses came here directly from New Orleans, where young Oros started his rise to the top of the riding ladder, and are quartered at Douglas Park. Just a week ago Oros drew past Don Meade, Florida sensation, and his services will be much in demand here, just as they are in Maryland and were in New Orleans. His apprenticeship will terminate during the Churchill Downs meeting, since he rode his first winner at Aurora May 12, 1938. That he will graduate from the apprentice division will focus greater attention on his work here, the reason being that not infrequently the loss of the five-pound apprentice allowance makes a big difference in the riders success. A younger member of the family, George Oros, is expected to have a greater opportunity in the saddle here. George made his first appearance in colors late in the Fair Grounds meeting, and with a little more experience, may not be much longer scoring his first victory.
