THREE-YEAR-OLD PROSPECTS OF 1939 CIENCIA By NORRIS ROYDEN As has been done several times in this annual series of the three-year-old prospects, the leading fillies have been grouped in one installment and although Ciencia furnishes , the principal subject, that doesnt necessarily mean she is considered the most promising member of her division. Ciencia is entitled to -a prominent position in this series, however, by virtue of her splendid performance in winning the Santa Anita Derby, but her general two-year-old record suggests the daughter of Cohort and Science, by Star Master, as an outstanding candidate for three-year-old filly honors, if not a formidable opponent of- the colts at the proper time. The effort of Robert J. Klebergs King Ranch miss in the Santa Anita Derby was outstanding. She came from behind in the stretch to win going away by five lengths oyer Xalapa Clown as Impound was third and Porters Mite fourth in the field of fourteen. She shouldered 115 pounds, six under scale, and covered the mile and one furlong in the creditable time of 1:50. Ciencia left no doubt as to her superiority over the others in the field for that 0,000 race, even though excuses were claimed for several of her more prominent foes. If they had run their races as their connections believed they should have done the Texas-owned miss still would have been returned the winner, so convincing was her effort. She had three other outings at the Arcadia course, easily accounting for a mile event . as a Derby sharpener after having finished second to Sweet Nancy in the Santa Susana Stakes at seven furlongs, in sloppy going. Sweet Nancy defeated her by seven lengths, " but Ciencia seemed hopelessly out of the race after being badly knocked back at the start and was still more than a dozen lengths away from the winner at the head of the stretch : in the field of fourteen fillies. An early start in racing was made by Ciencia and she had met with only moderate : success until being taken to New York to start in the Matron Stakes. She ran very : gamely in that rich test for juvenile fillies and was only beaten, a head by Big Hurry. : At Empire City the King Ranch miss was a steadily finishing second to Xalapa Clown in the Ardsley Handicap and then administered Smart Cracks first defeat in the Autumn Day Stakes. The Walden Handicap marked her final outing of 1938 and she was third to Inscoelda and Volitant, beaten four lengths, finishing the mile and one-sixteenth in stout fashion just the same. Ciencia is on the small side, neatly yet solidly made. She is the. latest in a family of stake winners, being a half-sister to the Lawrence Realization winner, Unfailing, while her dam was a half-sister to Good Gamble. Her fourth dam won the Rosedale Stakes and was the granddam of the Futurity winner, Scapa Flow. Big Hurry, Dinner Date, Inscoelda and Sweet Nancy appear to be the other leading filly prospects on what has been shown. Inscoelda, robust like most of Inscos get, moved into prominence by winning the Arlington Lassie Stakes, but looked much better in capturing the Walden, in which she ran down the highly touted Volitant in the stretch. She was second to Big Hurry in the Selima, but might have won that event but for losing so much ground in the opening stage, after which she was rushed into contention, only to hang near the end. The Woolford Farm filly handled Ciencia very handily in the Walden and despite the latters fine Santa Anita Derby victory she is hailed by observers as the best of the three-year-old filly prospects. Inscoelda was the only one of the better fillies nominated for the Kentucky Derby, but she will be reserved for her Oaks engagements. Being by Insco, a son of Sir Galla-had HI., from a sister to North Star HI. and from a daughter of Wrack, with the next dam by Voter and the third by Commando, Inscoelda possesses plenty of staying blood. Big Hurry, a sister to Black Helen and, like the latter, diminutive, was fourth in the Pimlico Futurity after winning the Selima, but unless she improves she may have a tough time in her division this season. She may have a better stablemate in Bass Wood, a sister to Bloodroot, with sufficient size and an apparent liking for distance running. Bass Wood is the dark horse among the three-year-old fillies. Dinner Date, by Stimulus, and a half-sister to the Futurity winner, Tintagel, showed plenty of speed in winning the Spinaway and Matron Stakes and running second in the Arlington Lassie Stakes, but third was the best she could do in the mile Selima, and distance running may come hard for her. Sweet Nancy gave a smashing performance in the Santa Margarita Stakes, at a mile and one-sixteenth, losing by a nose to the older Flying Lee, to which she was giving considerable weight by the scale, after having won the Santa Susana off by herself. She disappointed in the Santa Anita Derby, but too much might have been taken out of her when meeting older fillies and mares in the mud. The daughter of Gallant Sir Fiorina is worth tabbing, however. Smart Crack seems only a sprinter, but Smart Trick, winner of the Prairie State Stakes and Hawthorne Autumn Handicap, may prove very dangerous among the fillies. She is by Cohort, sire of Roman Soldier and Ciencia, and from a daughter of Prince Pal, the next dam by Fair Play, and ought to handle distance racing well. fOrme ........
