LARGE CROWD VISITS KEENELAND ON SUNDAY -a SEASON OPENING NEAR Much Interest Shown in Kentucky Inaugural on Thursday, Week-End Arrivals Include a Number, of Horses From Louisville and and Southern Points. LEXINGTON, Ky., April 10. Taking advantage of an ideal spring day, a large number of visitors were at Keeneland Sunday to inspect the beautiful course and watch the thoroughbreds go through their daily routines. Keeneland opens the Kentucky racing season on Thursday and will run for a period of eleven days. Although the track was still in a slow-condition, the training period was a long and busy one and the vork tabs contain the names of nearly 100 horses. Those visitors to arrive at the track early in the morning saw Calexico, C. H. Clearys Blue Grass Stakes and Kentucky Derby hope, Greentree Stables Roll and Toss, one of the four Mrs. Whitney nominees for the two stakes and Hal Price Headleys Atatime, in useful workouts. Detector, Timeful and Hash were given blowouts for longer drills this morning. Sunday was the first clear day since Thursday, the weather was warmer and with the meeting rapidly approaching the thoroughbred lovers were anxious to get a preview of what is to take place for two weeks. During the afternoon long lines of automobiles paraded through the grounds and there were many fans present when darkness started to envelope the course. HORSE COLONY INCREASES. During the week-end the horse colony grew by leaps and bounds. Two carloads arrived from Florida and several stables quartered at Louisville sent over divisions to participate in the meeting. One of the more prominent stables to be vanned from Louisville, was a division of the I. J. Collins stable in charge of Al Miller. It was headed by Bernard F., candidate for the Phoenix and Ben Ali Handicaps. Oddesa Beulah, recently renamed Dale K., and winner of the 1938 Lafayette Stakes, Flying Up, Pehamis, Kremlin and Hargram accompanied him here. Bernard F. won two of his three starts at the recent Oaklawn Park meeting and appears to be in the form that carried him to four straight victories last fall. Edward H. Haughton brought in fourteen head from Miami and found quarters for four horses at Keeneland and the others were vanned to Joe Pattersons Paradise Stock Farm. John Goode, head trainer for J. W. Parrish, brought in seven head from Florida to augment the stable his son, Jack Goode, has here for the Midway Bankers. In the Florida shipment were Whim Wham, Griddle, Last Rose, Eruption, Hatterfield and Centuple. J. P. "Tiny" Keezek brought five of the Le Mar Stock Farm colorbearers from the farm. He has four more at the Leo Marks farm that will be vanned over for engagements. IMPRESSIVE WORKOUTS. From a time standpoint Roll and Toss turned in the best trial Sunday, but Calexico, a recent graduate from the maiden ranks, added many new friends by his impressive mile drill. Roll and Toss turned eight furlongs in 1:43 handily and Calexico was timed in 1:44. Ridden by Eddie Arcaro, Roll and Toss began his task at the mile post and ran tha half-mile in :51 and the six furlongs in Continued on sixteenth page. Showing a liking for the slow track, Calex-ico turned the half mile in :50 and then ran the six furlongs in 1:16 as trainer Clifford Porter waved down his rider. Porter was very well pleased with the work and stated that it was his intention to run him once before the Blue Grass Stakes. Timeful, a recent arrival here which Theodore E. Mueller named for the two stakes, breezed five furlongs in 1:05. Detector reeled off a half mile in :484,f,. Although a maiden, Atatime, a son of Supremus Garden of Allah n. has attracted considerable attention by his fine trials this spring. He was given a seven furlongs drill which he accomplished in 1:35. He stepped the half mile in :50 and six furlongs in 1:21. The Crestwood Purse, for three-year-olds and secondary attraction for opening day, is expected to attract a number of the twenty-one Blue Grass Stakes cligibles! The race is over one and one-sixteenth miles.
