EL CHICQ S GOOD WORK Gallops One Mile in Loose Mud in 1 :4325 at Belmont Park. Trainer Brady . Plans to Start the Kentucky Derby Favorite in Overnight Race Saturday at Jamaica. NEW YORK, N. Y., April 10. William Zieglers El Chico, 4 to 1 favorite for the sixty-fifth Kentucky Derby, proved his ability to run over an off track by an excellent workout at Belmont Park Sunday. The 1938 two-year-old champion splashed through eight furlongs of loose mud in 1:43, breezing, all the way. He appeared eager to run at the finish. "I guess that answers the question as to whether the kid requires a pasteboard track in order to step," said trainer Matt Brady as he ordered El Chico cooled out after the trial. "Youll see him in competition next Saturday at Jamaica." Brady plans to start El Chico in a six furlongs overnight race on the week-end when the 1939 seasons opens at- Jamaica. Our Mat, stablemate of El Chico, and also eligible to the Derby next month, also worked a mile over todays cuppy track. He went along handily throughout the test, timed in 1:45. No definite plans have been made for the colts three-year-old campaign, but it is expected he will accompany the stable star to Kentucky for the Derby. JOHNSTOWN IN CANTER. At Aqueduct, where a rain-drenched course also prevailed, Johnstown, Belair Studs main reliance in the 0,000 added Churchill Downs special, was saddled for a light gallop. The bay chestnut Jamestown colt merely romped over the course under slight restraint. Trainer James Fitzsimmons said Johnstown would make his seasonal bow in the ,500 added Paumonok Handicap, feature event of the opening program Saturday. T. M. Dorsett, erroneously reported as being on the ailing list, is also quartered at the Queens County Jockey Club track. The chestnut son of Cohort, sire of Ciencia, the filly which won the Santa Anita Derby last February, startled dockers by his dazzling speed in a mile workout yesterday. He circled the distance in the fast time of 1:43. Trainer J. B. Theall emphatically denied Continued on fifteenth page. EL CHICOSJOOD WORK Continued from first page. r recent reports his charge was in a critical condition as a result of an insect bite. "The horse was laid up for four days at New Orleans before coming here last Thursday," Theall said. "His illness was nothing more than a slight case of laryngitis, from which he has completely recovered." T. M. Dorsett, owned by Joe W. Brown, New Orleans realtor, was good enough to win the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes at Churchill Downs last year. He also won four less important events and was second three times and twice third. His earnings were 5,080. The colt will make his first three-year-old start in the Stuyvesant Handicap at Jamaica on Saturday, April 22. Barring accident, he will be pitted against El Chico, Johnstown and others in the 0,000 added Wood Memorial, New Yorks annual preview of the Kentucky Derby classic a week later. Theall said that if his charge showed to advantage in his two Jamaica races he would be shipped to Kentucky for the Derby. The colt is a 30 to 1 shot in the winter books. He will be ridden by Leon "Buddy" Haas in all his races this year.
