BIG MEETING AT HOLLYWOOD PARK OPENS TODAY CRACK FIELD TO START IN PREMIERE HANDICAP HANDICAPBeautiful Beautiful California Track Will Renew Thirteen Rich Fixtures in Course of Fifty Days of Racing RacingINGLEWOOD INGLEWOOD Calif May 22 Hollywood Park offering 800000 in stakes and purses and home of the 75000 Hollywood Gold Cup opens its fiftyday summer meeting here tomorrow afternoon with an eightrace program featured by the Premiere Handi ¬ cap Much interest in the return of the sport to Southern California is evident here and Jack F Mackenzie general manager of the course confidently expects 20000 or more persons to witness the inaugural pro ¬ gram gramThe The Hollywood Turf Club has made lavish preparations for the meeting and every in ¬ dication points to great success The pro ¬ gram of thirteen stakes whose gross value will be in excess of 235000 and a purse pol ¬ icy under which no race will be worth less than 1200 has attracted to this beautiful plant some of the foremost stables of the country and before the meeting draws to a close on July 26 the track hopes to present a veritable parade of the turfs top ranking thoroughbreds The track has placed particular emphasis on this years running of the Gold Cup and the 25000 Hollywood Derby and as a result they have drawn the nominations of nearly every big name horse in training Entries for these events closed last week the Cup with sixtyfour subscriptions and the Derby with sixtyeight each figure a record recordSaturday Saturday will see the decision of another important fixture the 10000 Haggin Stakes for Californiabred twoyearolds This race was run in two divisions last summer and there is some chance that this policy will be repeated on Saturday in view of the great number of young homebreds being pointed for it If a decision is made to run the stake in two sections the Hollywood Turf Club may offer a 10000 purse for each di ¬ vision as it did last year yearThe The other stakes on Hollywoods program are Argonaut Handicap Will Rogers Hahd icap Golden State Breeders Handicap Se ¬ quoia Handicap Inglewood Handicap Vanity Handicap and Starlet Stakes each virtually assured a brilliant running runningHere Here to supervise the sport are officials well known for their experience and well known also to California fans Samuel C Nuckols is the presiding steward while sit ting with him are Edmond G Soule J Kingsley Macomber and Edwin J Brown the latter representing the California Horse Racing Board Francis P Dunne is the rac ¬ ing secretary and handicapper and the placing judges are R E Leighninger Floyd McKenney and W P Cassidy G R Wing field is back to do the starting John I Kissane is clerk of scales and the patrol judges are J C McGill J F Gallagher John Mjiiben G R Zarelli and J E Walter WalterThe The presence of these able officials End so many excellent horses augurs well for the quality of racing which Hollywood Park will offer and every indication points to some of the finest sport fans have seen here since the track opened
