DEIMOS UP IN FINAL STRIDES AT SUFFOLK SUFFOLKOvertakes Overtakes Big Brands Son for Neck Triumph in Portsmouth Purse Multitude Runs Third ThirdBOSTON BOSTON Mass May 22 Deimos from the string of Mrs F C Rompel recently turned over to the squire of Suffield Conn Phillip Schwartz to train did the unex ¬ pected and triumphed in the Portsmouth Purse the best race of the afternoon on the Suffolk Downs program The Portsmouth had its decision at one mile and seventy yards and brought together a field of five better grade platers with the Mais four yearold the extreme outsider in the com ¬ pany It was only by the matter of a neck that Deimos turned back Big Brands Son jfrom the string of Allen T Simmons with Le Mar Stock Farms Multitude third before Panorascope Sir Elmer brought up the rear a position he occupied from the start startBig Big Brands Son and Deimos went out to make the running racing abreast It was not long before they were well out in ad ¬ vance of Panorascope as the Fanfare Farm performer led the others The two leaders went along at a sprinting clip going the first quarter in 23 and coming to the half mile in 47 with only inches separating them With the six furlongs covered in 112 the Simmons gelding began to move away to increase his lead It was thought that this fast pace would take its toll and McMullen was sitting quietly on Panora ¬ scope Multitude had started moving up at this point pointJOCKEY JOCKEY SMITHS WISE MOVE MOVENearing Nearing the turn for home Eddie Smith Wisely gave Deimos a breathing spell and this permitted Big Brands Son to open up a lengths lead Panorascope was moving up steadily while the Le Mar colorbearer was also wearing down the leaders leadersInto Into the stretch Big Brands Son was still out in front but the Mars fouryearold was gaining ground steadily Multitude moved briefly approaching the furlong post but with the leaders reaching the mile in 138 and showing no signs of giving way the Canaan gelding was unable to better his position farther Deimos began bearing out during the late stages and forging to the front held Big Brands Son at bay all during the closing seventy yards Almost two lengths back of the runnerup Multitude was third well before Panorascope The latter loomed as possessing a royal chance enter ¬ ing the stretch but when the leaders showed no signs of coming back to him failed to become much of a threat threatSir Sir Elmer last to leave the stalls played no serious part in the running racing in last place the entire trip The winner re ¬ turned a mutuel of 3000 and hung up 143 for the distance distanceHot Hot and sultry weather prevailed and one pf the largest weekday gatherings of the meeting was on hand Favorites fared poor ¬ ly in most of the races only one choice being successful in the first seven races although the majority of the winners came in for stout support
