Preakness Preakness Candidates Candidates Finish Finish Training; Training; Relious Relious Surprises Surprises in in Chicago Chicago Heights Heights Alsab Works Good Mile and Furlong Covers Route in 1 :55 2-5 In Mud — Valdina Orphan, Colchis Also Seen in Trials BALTIMORE, Md., May 7.— The Preakness, second of the three spring classics comprising Americas "Triple Crown," now is only 48 hours distant. All the 10 sprightly three -year-olds considered "probables" for this historic mile and three-sixteenths event have concluded their training and are marking time until the bugler blows them postward for the 50,000 lumps of rationed sugar Saturday. Three of the eligibles received their distant finals in the mud this morning. Alsab, who is well nigh "the forgotten horse" of this Preakness, despite his creditable second in the "Run for the Roses," put in the most impressive trial. Trainer Sarge Swenke adjusted the blinkers on Good Goods courageous son and he skipped through nine furlongs at the lively, fast-track rate of :234/5, :48%, 1:13%. 1:40% and 1:55%, going handily all the way and, in fact, showing such ability as to cause much lifting of eyebrows among railbirds. Colchis Breezes One Mile The Valdina Farms hard-hitting Valdina Orphan was brought to the Preakness course — which is the identical strip horses have raced over here since 1870 — and went a mile and a furlong in time a couple of seconds slower. With trainer Frank Catrone supervising the move, this son of Hilltown was only breezing in :51, 1:16%, 1:43% and 1:57%. Colchis, the fleet and game gelding who races for the international sportsman-breeder, Robert Sterling Clark, was sent a mile by trainer Vince Mara. Happy Argos best son was rated along at a breezing clip in :53%, 1:19% and 1:47%. The connections of each of this trio pronounced themselves completely satisfied with their champions condition. Sun Again. Requested, Domingo, Fair Call, Apache and the torrid favorites, Shut Out and Devil Diver, were out for limbering up gallops. Trainer "Abou" Ben Jones, the Mis-sourian who developed Whirlaway, says that if the track is dry Warren Wrights Sun Again is still a post starter in the week-ends "Run for the Black-Eyed Susans," as David Forst Francis Woods, Continued on Page Three j I , i i ■ • I I , j ! | ♦ . Preakness Hopefuls Complete Training Alsab Works Nine Furlongs In 1 :55 2-5 in Mud— Field Of Ten Still Seems Likely Continued from Page One the man of many titles, calls the Preakness. However, Jones does not appear altogether satisfied with the Sun Teddy colts present condition, calling attention to the fact his charge lost weight noticeably in earlier spring outings and reflecting that the Withers, Belmont, Dwyer and other rich three-year-old special remain, much as he would like to win the Preakness. Meanwhile, Uncle Matt Daiger and Harry Parr are having their headaches trying to accommodate those who desire to see this ensuing Preakness from a box seat, of which there are only about 200 at rustic old Pimlico. Interest in the seasons crop of three-year-olds was stimulated by the running of last week-ends Kentucky Derby, a stake which left some moot points concerning the relative worth of these colts. The all-absorbing question in local turf circles is one of "Whos Jake" between the favored Greentree pair of the Derby winner Shut Out and jockey Eddie Arcaros preference of the duo, Devil Diver. Around the first lady of the American turfs establishment there seems to be a definite inclination to think "the Devil" is the stouter colt. Alsabs die-hard rooters still hopefully think he will re-establish his superiority in the Preakness, but Colchis admirers, of whom there are many in the "Free State " point out that the Happy Argo gelding twice beat the mercurial Alsab at Havre de Grace. Apache has something of a following as a result of his impressive trial yesterday, and Requested also can claim many admirers. Race May Be Run on "Off" Track But Mrs. Whitneys pair, from this distance, loom odds-on choices. There are any number of Arcaro fans hereabouts who insist he can win this Preakness on a Shetland pony. As in the Derby, Arcaro and Wright will split the winning riders fee in the Preakness in the event either wins. While the Kentucky booter, who helped transform Whirlaway into one of the most sedate of the thoroughbreds, confidently declares, "Ill do the splitting this time." Todays strip reminded formists of the possibility of the Preakness being decided in wet footing. This would make little difference, however, in the status of Devil Diver, Requested, Alsab, Colchis and per-i haps Shut Out, though trainer Gaver isnt so sanguine of the Derby heros mud ability. The majority of the owners of the ten Preakness "probables" propose to be pres- ent for Saturdays keenly interesting battle. The only ones who definitely wont be in attendance are Mrs. Payne Whitney and Louis B. Mayer, the latter owner of the big "green" Domingo, an invader from Long Island. William Woodward, R. S. Clark, Emerson F. Woodward, Mrs. A. L. Sabath, Ben Whitaker, Mrs. Barclay Douglas and Warren Wright plan to be on hand and lend their hopefuls their rooting support. Meanwhile, the Preakness lineup remains the same as yesterday: Greentree s Shut Out and Devil Diver; Mrs. Al Sabath s Alsab; Ben Whitaker s Requested; E. F. Woodwards Valdina Farms Valdina Orphan; Mrs. Douglas Mill River Stable Fair Call; Calumet Farms Sun Again; R. S. Clarks Colchis; L. B. Mayers Domingo, and Belairs Apache.
