Belmont Planning Carriage Parade Novel Fashion Show to Be Opening Day Feature — Drive To Sell Bonds and Stamps NEW YORK, N. Y., May 7.— Fine horses and fine fashions will share the spotlight at the opening of Belmont Parks spring race meeting, on May 11, when a patriotic parade of "carriage elegance" will serve to launch a war fund drive at the Long Island race course. During the first racing interval of the afternoon, a group of old time horse-drawn vehicles will parade in the paddock, carrying models dressed in the latest New York fashion creations. Some of the carriages, including a jaunting cart, a gig and a dog cart, are from neighboring Long Island estates where they are already in daily use. All are symptomatic of the types of horse and buggy which may become familiar sights of the American roadside during the coming months, due to increasing gas and tire shortages. The fashions will demonstrate the appropriate costuming for todays "carriage elegance," with modern versions of the "duster," tiny coaching hats and gay parasols as accessories for spectator sports or dressy daytime costumes. The accent throughout the collection of twenty-four costumes will be on color and on the streamlined wartime silhouette. Parade of Mannequins After the third race the mannequins will promenade on the runway of the Fashion Terrace for the clubhouse audience. Models and fashions are being supplied by Bon-wit Teller, Hattie Carnegie. Jay Thorpe, De Pinna, Milgrim, Saks Fifth Avenue and Tailored Woman. Belmont Park is one of the five New York State race tracks which is donating the first 00,000 of its profits to the war relief funds. In addition, a drive for the sale of War Savings Bonds and Stamps will be launched on the opening day, when models taking part in the carriage parade will help to sell bonds and stamps during the afternoon. The role of Belmont Park as a showcase for New York style creations was highlighted a year ago with the opening of a special Fashion Terrace in the clubhouse. This spring, during the four-week race meeting, two Wednesday fashion show luncheons are scheduled for the terrace, with the proceeds going to designated war charities. At the first of these luncheons, on May 20, Lilly Dache, John Frederics and Sally Victor will present "Pretty, Patriotic and Priority Free," a point showing of new summer hat designs for the benefit of the American Red Cross. "Summer Scene, 1942" will be presented by Russeks Fifth Avenue on May 27, with the luncheon proceeds going to the Navy Relief Society.
