I I | J | ! ; i ■Charles Towns Spring Meeting Gets Under Way Card Nine Races on Opening Program of 24-Day Session CHARLES TOWN, W. Va., May 9.— With the spring term of racing terminated on the major Maryland tracks, racing switches over to West Virginia, where the summer meeting of the Charles Town Jockey Club will be inaugurated Monday. Racing secretary Fred Burton has arranged a brilliant program to begin another season for the local organization, and with a plentiful supply of racing material on the grounds, had no difficulty filling the inaugural card. Nine races will be run on the initial program of the 24-day session, headed by the Inaugural Purse, which is under allowance conditions at seven furlongs. A supporting card of eight other events should prove excellent entertainment for the large attendance expected. Since the close of the fall meeting several improvements have been added to the plant. Barns were re-painted and repaired, while the racing strip has been carefully prepared by track superintendent Henry Erickson so that It has been judged by horsemen as one of the safer tracks in the country. The Thomas speed camera will record all finishes and the Bahr starting gate will be operated. The daily double will be on the second and third races.
