Sportsmans War Benefit Program Is Big Success Army, Navy Relief Funds, Service Mens Center Enriched 2,750 CICERO, 111., May 11.— Last Wednesday, May 6, was set aside as War Benefit Day at Sportsmans Park and the gross receipts of the days racing for the Army and Navy Relief Funds and the Service Mens Center resulted in a grand total of 2,750 for those most worthy causes. The check from the National Jockey Club amounted to the sum of 5,136.29. This amount represents the gross receipts from the mutuels, gate and also from the program sales. The jockeys and grooms, who donated 50 per cent of their earnings for the day, turned over 69.00 to the fund. Other contributions from various sources reached the total of ,244.71, which made a total of 2,750 in all. A report from the sales of War Stamps and War Bonds showed that over 5,000 in purchases were made, thus showing that the patrons of the turf are more than willing to do their share to help us win this war. Col. Ed Roth, Jr., chief of staff of the U. S. Army, the Sixth Corps area, ac- ccpted the money in behalf of the Army; I Capt. E. A. Lofquist represented the Navy, j and Robert P. Dunham, of the Chicago Civilian IJefen.se C.oiimiil t.ee, represented the Outlet Mens .enter. The money was equally divided amour, the three organizations.
