New York News and Notes BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., May 11. Al Burlen, clerk of the scales, reports that a large number of steeplechase riders are available at Belmont Park. Among those on hand opening day were L. Newton, E. Crowther, L. Sessa, E. Roberts, R. Hayhurst, W. Cruz, R. Miller, M. L. Brown, F. Slate, S. ONeill, E. Jennings, R. Almony, A. Scott and H. Riles. Trainer Knox Osborne reported the arrival of Menex, Tellmenow, Anticlimax, Equinox, Who Me and Fortess. They came from Maryland. Another division of the stable was shipped to Suffolk Downs for that meeting. Jockey Billie Thompson returned from his home in Paducah, Ky., and was at Belmont Monday. Thompson, who was suspended for 10 days, may accept mounts at the current meeting, as his suspension ends Tuesday. Robert Buchanan, a member of the armed forces and a son of the secretary to the California Horse Race Board, was j among the afternoons visitors. He was a guest of Steward! Francis Dunn. Trainer Ben Jones checked in from Pirn- j lico Sunday with Sun Again and this ; morning had Whirlaway on the local strip for a light gallop. The Greentree Stables Devil Diver, Shut j Out and Century Note arrived here Mon-! day from Pimlico in charge of trainer John j Gaver. g Vince Mara shipped the R. Sterling j Clark horses which he had at Pimlico here Monday morning. The shipment was headed by Colchis. | Jockey Porter Roberts arrived here to ride. His engagements will be made by Guy Lunsford. Roberts later will go to Delaware Park for that meeting. Fred Parks, steeplechase handicapper and racing secretary, arrived from Maryland to be on hand for the opening of Belmont Park. Jockey Tommy May, who was injured in a fall at Jamaica last week, is improved and is expected to be around and about shortly. Racing secretary and handicapper John B. Campbell is now working on the second edition of the condition book for the Belmont Park meeting. Jockey Mannie Berg arrived from Maryland to join the large riding colony already at Belmont Park. Jockey George Woolf arrived from Maryland and reported to trainer E. A. Christmas of the W. L. Brann stable. Major Elliott Roosevelt was among the early arrivals and was host to a party of friends. Jockey Wendell Eads was on hand for the afternoon and is prepared to accept outside mounts. The Belair Studs Apache was unloaded at Aqueduct Sunday from Pimlico by trainer Fitzsimmons. Mioland headed the C S. Howard shipment here in charge of trainer Tom Smith. H. P. Headley arrived from Lexington, Ky., and plans a lengthy visit.
