Smacked, Smacked, Defense Defense Arlington Arlington Winners; Winners; Scotland Scotland Light Light Charges Charges to to Neck Neck Score Score Whips Song o War In Empire Feature Arcaro Brings Barrington Racer Up From Last Place To Gain Thrilling Verdict f YONKERS, N. Y., June 29. Scotland Light, racing for Tom Howells The Barrington Stable, was winner of the Pebbles Purse, opening feature of the Empire City Association at the popular Yonkers course this afternoon, but he was not confirmed in his victory by the stewards until and claim of foul, lodged by Clingman, who had ridden the second horse, Song o War, was denied. It was charged that Arcaro, as he drove Scotland Light through to victory on the inside in the stretch, had interfered with the Hard Tack gelding, but there appeared no good reason for altering the order of the finish. The opening of the new meeting brought out a crowd of 13,967, according to the turnstile count, and it was a typical Empire City attendance," where the patrons are just a little bit more vociferous than at any other of the New York courses. The track was at its best for inaugural day. Race Named After Derby Favorite of 1915 The Pebbles Purse was a dash of five and three-quarter furlongs confined to the three-year-olds and named for Pebbles that raced so brilliantly for James Butler the elder. In fact he was favorite for the Kentucky Derby of 1915, in which he was only beaten by the great filly Regret. Only five went to the post for this dash, and Scotland Light, the choice, appeared to have no chance in the back stretch when he was galloping along five lengths back of the field. As they swung around the far turn, he was still so far back of the contention that he did not seem to have a remote chance. Natomas was the one to cut out the early pace, but Song o War was racing along stridefor stride with her, and Burgaway was a close third for a time and well before Ben Gray, the only other starter. Before the stretch was reached, Song o War had put the filly away and as he moved into the lead Ben Gray followed - after him and as he moved Clingman came over with Song o War to block him slightly. By this time Scotland Light was steadily making up ground on the inside, but it did not seem possible he would be Continued on Page Forty-Three. Scotland Light Charges To Thrilling Neck Score Takes Pebbles Purse at Empire Oyer Song o War and Ben Gray Continued from Page One able to find his way through in the short stretch. Then there came the opening, and Arcaro drove him through to land him winner by a neck and he was going away. Song o War had beaten Ben Gray a length and as the race was run it appeared that the River Edge gelding was best of the company and would probably have won but for the interference he suffered in the stretch, for which Song o War was to blame. Mrs. G. Cary Winfreys Aboyne established a new track record for the mile and a sixteenth in the sixth race, which attracted just as much attention, as the Pebbles Purse, when he was winner in 1:43. To score he broke the winning streak of Billy O., when the Freedman colt crossed the line at his heels. Far back of these, King Torch beat Yankee Party for fourth. TKe new meeting opened with a disqualification when Persistent, after leading home a field of plater juveniles, was set back for a palpable stretch foul in which Longden permitted her to bear in until she had seriously interfered with four horses. By the ruling of the stewards, the race was awarded to Mrs. Parker Comings Pamphlet, a long shot who paid 4.50 for each wager. Flying Son, another outsider, moved up to second place, and Sparkling Mafd was placed third over Liquid Lunch. After the disqualification in the first race, there was another untoward happening in the second when after the horses were at the post. War Melody, the odds-on choice, was ordered back to the paddock as being unfit to run. This meant the refunding of all wagers, including those that had the daughter of Royal Minstrel coupled With Pamphlet in the Daily Double. With War Melody out of the way. Mrs. Anthony Pelleteris Zaca Gray proved easily best. Basil James sent her into a clear lead in the dash of five and three-quarters furlongs, and rated her along before the others all the way to have her winner by more than three lengths. Bug Boy, a recent winner, ran down Ack Ack. to take the place, and that gelding saved third from Brother Dear. It developed that before the running Don Meade, who had the mount on War Melody, had pointed out that she was lame, and. he tried to avoid the detail. However, she was permitted to go to the post and later was withdrawn.
