Sugarage in Convincing Score at Detroit Track Jockey Ingess Gives Pardue Mare Alert Ride to Beat Purple Wrack DETROIT, Mich., June 29. Sugarage, six-year-old chestnut daughter of Percentage Sugar Bird racing under the colors of Mrs. Homer Pardue, scored a convincing victory in the first race at the Detroit Fair Grounds today. Alertly ridden by Chesterlngess, Sugarage came to the end of the six furlongs two lengths before Ivan Parkes Purple Wrack, and the latter was three-quarters of a length before Mrs. Ray Grundys Gallant Hour, who downed the nine other starters for the minor end of the purse. In winning the initial offering today Sugarage hung up her second success of the current meeting and stepped the distance over the fast track in 1:12. Stoutly supported in the speculation, the Pardue mares triumph was a most popular one with the large crowd present, for she was backed down to odds of 8 to 5. Starter Bryan Steele effected a good start at once and before the field had gone a quarter of a mile Sugarage had taken over the pacemaking task. Le Chat was her closest rival, while Gallant Hour raced third, a good margin before Hadmore. Purple Wrack was no better than sixth in the run to the upper turn. Sugarage continued to show the way and Continued on Page Forty-Three. Sugarage in Convincing Score at Detroit Track Jockey Ingess Gives Pardue Mare Alert Ride to Beat Purple Wrack Continued from Page One before reaching the half-mile ground she was two and one-half lengths before Le Chat, who was a length inadvance of Had-more. Purple Wrack held on determinedly to fourth position and he was always within striking distance of the leader. Turning into the stretch Sugarage shook off Le Chat and the latter dropped back, soundly beaten. Purple Wrack moved up to offer his closing challenge, and Had-more tired. Ingess then shook up Sugar-age and his mount responded readily enough to easily hold Purple Wrack safe in the run to the wire, but the latter finished strongly on his own courage to withstand the closing, challenge of Gallant Hour. Extend, who had been far back to the final quarter mile, closed with a rush to take fourth money. Mrs. W. O. Hicks furnished the winner in the second race at six furlongs when her Patricia A. came to the final marker a head before Grissom and Shermans Erin Torch. The latter held a two and a half lengths advantage over Mrs. J. J. Shugrues Trustworthy, who turned back the seven other starters to earn the third reward. Just Enuf, who was favored for the sprint, i bore out the entire trip and could do no better than seventh. Patricia A. won her second purse of the 1942 season, and, after completing her task in 1:11-, rewarded her supporters with a 2.60 straight "tote" pay-off. The Hicks filly also completed the "Daily Double" which was worth 5. Albert Bodiou handled Patricia A. in smart fashion, and took her to the front soon after the start. After his mount disposed of Hutoka in the first half mile, Bodiou kept right after Patricia A. in the drive, and she lasted to withstand Erin Torchs belated rush. Trustworthy ran evenly throughout, to retain third honors.
