One Link Wins Detroit Opening Event by Neck Nips Yarn Spinner as Latter Is Only Head Before Royal Shawl DETROIT, Mich., June 18.— In one of the best finishes of the program Grand Stables One Link scored a surprising victory in the first race at the Detroit Fair Grounds today before a crowd of M,t00. Given a hustling ride by Cornelio Mojena. One Link was up in the closing strides of the mile and one-sixteenth test to earn a neck decision over J. M. Grieves favored Yarn Spinner, who was a head before Tall Trees Stables Royal Shawl, who was third at the wire. In accounting for his first score of the 1943 season, One Link, a four-year-old gelded son of Only One — Royal Chain, raced the distance over the fast track in t 1:47. Almost entirely overlooked in the wagering, the victor rewarded his scattered ! supporters with a straight "tote" pay-off f of 2.80. Kept well in hand while saving ground in the first three-quarters of a mile, One Link, responded readily when called upon and raced gamely on the outside to down t the leaders, then held Yarn Spinner safe. The latter, far back and outrun until approaching . the final turn, slipped through i on the inside for the drive and closed determinedly, but could not overhaul the 1 winner. Royal Shawl, who annexed the minor C end of the purse, improved her position i steadily during the earlier stages of the 8 race and finished determinedly, taking that t position in easy fashion over Get Good. . Field Lark and Flying Reigh, who cut out t the running until well settled in the stretch, , finished eighth and fifth, respectively, after r t . i their display of speed. Flying Reigh moved into the lead in the last eighth, but tired thereafter and lost ground steadily to the finish.
