L J J r t t x J j , ■; j j . , ] I ] | j Breeders Awards at Jamaica Meeting American breeders profited substantially from the meeting of the Metropolitan Jockey Club at Jamaica, the first of the New York racing associations to put into practice the policy editorially advocated by this publication of awarding special premiums to the producers of thoroughbreds. Figures compiled by The Jockey Club reveal that a total of ,560 was disbursed during the 27-day run of the first meeting of the year on the Empire State circuit. Representatives of the five New York tracks met on May 5 and agreed to share the success of their racing "with the breeders, adopting a uniform scale of awards, retroactively effective from April 1. It was voted to give the breeder of the winner of every race 5 and the breeder of the horse finishing second 5. Later it was decided to change the awards, the 5 premium for second horses being abolished. Under the rule now prevailing, 5 goes to the breeder of the winner of every overnight race on the New York circuit, and five per cent of the added value of the purse to the breeder of the winner of every stake event whose conditions do not provide for a fixed breeders award. Under the 5 and 5 practice throughout the Jamaica meeting, ,755 was distributed among breeders of winners and ,805 among breeders of the placed horses. There were 18© races run during the course of the meeting, two resulting in dead heats for first. A total of 136 breeders collected the special awards. In two instances when horses foaled abroad finished in front, the premiums were paid to the importers, Maj. Louie A. Beard and L. L. Lawrence. Major Beard is the importer on the record of Haile, who won one race and twice finished second. Lawrence brought to this country Princequillo, who won one race, and Guinea Club and Manola, each of whom finished second. The large number of breeders who shared in the awards is rather surprising. They included the foremost and the most obscure. Indeed, in the latter category are some of whom racegoers never heard. Premiums totalling more than 00 went to only sixteen breeders. And only six collected more than 00. Topping the list, as might be expected of Americas leading breeder of quality stock, is Arthur B. Hancock. The master of Claiborne Stud at Paris, Ky., and Ellerslie Stud, Charlottesville, Va., had fourteen winners and thirteen placed horses, who earned him 45. Belair Stud of William Woodward, chairman of The Jockey Club was second. He received a check for 60. He had the winners of eleven races, including one dead heat, and six seconds. Other breeders in the 00-and-up bracket were Mrs. John Hertz, 60; George D. Widener, 45; Mereworth Stud, 45; Idle Hour Stock Farm, 30; Brookmeade Farm, 70; Marshall Field, 70; Coldstream Stud, 60; Samuel D. Riddle, 60; Wheatley Stable, 60; Robert Sterling Clark, 55; A. G.
