Hoosier Turns In Game Performance To Take Arcade Purse at Pawtucket Beats Kantar Run by Head * — Latter Disqualified for Fouling Aboyne in Stretch PAWTUCKET, R. I., April 24.— Hoosier, a gelded son of Agrarian, carried Mrs. F. D. Rices silks to a game triumph in the Arcade Purse, feature attraction at Narragansett Park today before 7,000 patrons. Hard ridden throughout by Joe Martin, Hoosier reached the end of the mile and 70 yards journey a scant nose before J. H. Carrs Kantar Run, who was three and a half lengths before Mrs. Thomas Haskos Darby Ducat. A disqualification marred the running when Kantar Run was set back for fouling Aboyne during the stretch run. Jockey Pratt, who rode Kantar Run, was held blameless when his mount swerved to the inside impeding the favored Aboyne to such extent that the Beattie gelding had to be taken up sharply. In the revised placings Darby Ducat was awarded second honors while Aboyne, who had finished fourth was moved up to third. Starter Buddy Wingfield dispatched the seven starters in perfect alignment and Martin immediately sent Hoosier to the front with Aboyne in closest pursuit and Flange off third. Hoosier continued to show the way to the stretch but he was under pressure to withstand the repeated bids of Aboyne while Kantar Run moved up to third in the opening half mile and raced determinedly. Aboyne Eliminated Turning into the stretch Hoosier enjoyed a half length advantage over Aboyne, who was a length in advance of Kantar Run. The latter then bore over sharply when Pratt subjected him to punishment and, after eliminating Aboyne, went on to fight it out with Hoosier. The two leaders came to the wire closely lapped and it was necessary to have a picture in order to separate the pair, Hoosier getting the verdict. Apprentice Harry Pratt, Pawtucket lad. piloted his third winner of the matinee astride I. K. Mourars Rough Command in the six-furlong fifth race. Pratt had Rough Command in serious contention at once and, after sending the Mourar gelding to the front near the stretch, permitted his mount to coast to the finish with a three -length advantage. Macks Miss closed de- terminedly to take the place award over : Bills Sister by a length and a quarter. The ; favored Circus Wings was never a prominent * factor and wound up fifth in the eight -horse field which contested. Rough Command, which was second choice in the speculation, paid 0.20 and 1 raced the distance over the sloppy strip in 1 l:134/5. Todays victory marked up the - third success of Rough Commands 1944 1 campaign.
