Rounders to Start j In Jamaica Sprint Helis Colorbearer Faces Cassis, Doublrab, Le Havre And First Fiddle Today JAMAICA. L. I.. N. Y.. April 24.— The ! Red River Handicap, ,100 added dash at six furlongs, which will feature tomorrows program at Jamaica, has drawn only five starters, yet it promises one of the most interesting sprint offerings of the local meeting. William Helis Rounders heads the Red River under 118 pounds and he is followed in the weights by Howe Stable *s Cassis, 114; Mrs. T. Christophers Doublrab, 112: Mrs. E. Mulrenans First Fiddle, 106. and Helen Murphys Le Havre. 100 pounds. At the weights and distance this is a wide open affair, for it includes two of the best sprinters in the east in Doublrab and Cassis, and First Fiddle and Rounders, while regarded as middle distance performers, both have a world of early speed. Le Havre won the Shevlin at Aqueduct last season, beating Famous Victory and Modest Lad and also captured a pair of overnight races in a light campaign of seven starts. One of these victories was scored on a muddy track such is to as sure prevail here i tomorrow. I Rounders, who is the probable choice in the Red River, has not been seen in public since he was beaten a head by Marriage in the 5,000 New Orleans Handicap on February 19. First Fiddle also was last seen in that same race and he finished a half length back of the. Irish-bred horse. On that occasion. Rounders was giving First Fiddle only two pounds while tomorrow he concedes a dozen. First Fiddle lacked early speed on that occasion and had a rough trip besides, but on other occasions has been known to take the track at the break. I Sprint Champion of 1942 Doublrab was the sprint champion of i 1942 and trainer Harris Brown has stated; that he beli ved the gray son of Sherab ! would regain that throne this season. In his initial effort this year, Doublrab set the pace to the head of the stretch, then tired and was beaten three-lengths by Brownie, Jack S. L. and Breezing Home, with Signator a nose behind him. Signator came light back to beat a similar field in clever fashion. If that race did Doublrab as much good as it apparently did the Woolford Farm speedster, hell take a lot of beating tomorrow. He drops no less than 14 pounds and will have Charlie Wahler aboard again. Cassis, showed a liking for the Metropolitan Jockey Club strip last year when he ! won the Continental Handicap here. He I ran a dull race in the Paumonok for his I . 1944 debut, but trainer Preston Burchs I horses have been racing in improved form in recent days and the son of Bull Dog- I Gay Knightess may give a better account of himself tomorrow. Wet footing wont , bother him. He stepped a handy five furlongs j in 1:01 on the Belmont main track, on Friday for this engagement. I Rounders impressed workwatchers Sun-; j day with a nimble six furlongs in 1:15% under double wraps over a dead strip. The Helis star preceded that move with a mile and a furlong in 1:57% several days ago. First Fiddle was given an easy six furlongs in 1:20 at Jamaica on Friday and had been a mile in l:4435 before that. Doublrab blew out three furlongs in :364s this morning, indicating he is fit for his best effort. The secondary feature is the Malvern Handicap. ,600 test at a mile and a furlong, which has drawn seven overnight entries. This field is headed by Sugar Ration, with 122 pounds. Deseronto, who raced promisingly here the other day, is next at 120 followed by Equinox, 115; Perfect Rhyme, 112; Fuego and Grey Hood, 108; and Magdala. 107. Grey Hood won at first asking here last Monday, while Sugar Ration and Fuego have also raced well.
