Surprises While Proving Repeater Troutt Filly Drives to Wire. One Length Before Poodoo; Hasty Sun Earns Diploma HAWTHORNE, Cicero, HI., May 22. Susie C, a homebred daughter of Preferred and Lady Federal, carried Clyde Troutts colors to a convincing victory here today in the fourth race, one of the better offerings on an ordinary program. Splendidly ridden by Del Jessop, Susie C. sped to the finish of the six furlongs a length before Mrs. H. C. Bockmans Poodoo, who was second by three and one-half lengths in . advance of M.G. Farnsworths Steeple Jack, third in the band of seven three-year-olds engaged in the sprint. Foursome Stables favored Confirmation never was a serious threat and finished fifth, beaten a head for fourth money by Benjamin Fogel-sons Casa Libre. Susie c, who won her previous start at the local oval, stepped the three-quarters over the slow track in 1:16 and, one of the outsiders in the wagering, returned a 8.20 straight "tote" pay-off. Susie C.s dam, Lady Federal, is remembered at Hawthorne for several outstanding performances during her racing career, and her daughter evidently inherited her liking for the local course. Tree Mount Offers Bid Soon after starter Ruby White dispatched the field, Susie C. outran Poodoo for the early lead and she neyer was headed once she had taken command. Tree Mount offered a bold bid during the run to the upper turn and, after Susie C. had shaken off the VanBerg colt, she then continued resolutely to the stretch. Poodoo turned in a sharp effort, offering several bold challenges to Susie C. during the final quarter mile, but she could not overtake the Troutt filly, who drew clear during the last sixteenth. Poodoo held on well in the late stages and she was not under strong pressure to easily attain the place award over Steeple Jack. The latter failed to rally noticeably when roused for the drive and could not threaten the leaders although he was an easy third over Casa Libre. The Hawthorne racing strip, which has been decidedly "off" during the major portion of the current meeting, was slow today, but improved slightly under the prevailing brisk wind. Despite threatening overhead conditions and predicted rainfall, an active crowd of 10,618 patrons witnessed the sport at the West Side plant. Woolford Farms silks were prominently displayed in the Columbus Park Purse, a six-furlong sprint for three-year-old maidens when Hasty Sun, ridden by Al Bodiou, finished first and Westernaire, from the Herbert M. Wolf establishment, ran third. Louis Schlossers locally-owned Sweet Dough, split the Woolford pair, running second, beaten but a scant nose by Hasty Sun. Nicolas Marschs Track Ace, choice Continued on Page Twenty-Four Susie C. Leads Throughout In Surprise Hawthorne Win Continued from Page One for the dash, ran fourth after displaying early speed. Hasty Sun, making his first public appearance since shipment from Hialeah, stepped the Columbus Park distance in 1:16 and was good for .40 straight, the Woolford Farm ntry being second choice to Track Ace in the "tote." Jockey Willie Hanka, accepting his first mount since arrival from Churchill Downs, rode M. G. Farnsworths Capsicum to a half-length decision in the six and one-half furlong opener. L, O. Handleys favored Cinesar took a clear lead when settled in the stretch, but he could not withstand Capsicums closing challenge and finished second, five lengths in advance of K. Witts Lookout Rascal, third in the field of eight starters.
