BETWEEN RACES ByoscMom BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., May 22. Frankly, the management of Empire City doesnt know how its first International Special, the 00,000 Gold Cup at scale weight at a mile and five furlongs, will shape up at post time. But even if no foreign foreign horses horses fly fly over over from from Europe, Europe, foreign foreign horses horses fly fly over over from from Europe, Europe, or up from the Argentine for this, the inaugural running on July 19, the stake still promises to be outstanding in its own right with competition limited to horses currently racing in America, At the moment, there is no immediate prospect of aerial invasion from overseas, but even so, James Butler, president of Empire City, is keeping in touch by telephone with foreign points. It would appear well within the bounds of probability that Assault will start, and Stymie, according to trainer Hirsch Jacobs, is definitely pointing for the affair. While the Suburban may provide a drastic change in the money-winning line-up, it is just as probable that perhaps the all-time status will not materially change until after the Gold Cv.p running. . AAA The more exciting possibilities of the race, assuming that it is confined to" horses now racing in America, is the hope that several three-year-olds will find the scale enticing. A three-year-old will find himself pegged at 110 pounds as against 126 for his older rivals. As for sending three-year-olds against the aged competition at that time of the year, there is ample and successful precedent for such strategy. Besides, the race might be worth enough in eventual stud prestige to merit sending a three-year-old into the fray at the expense of starting in races confined to that age. The closing of the Gold Cup purposely was delayed beyond the usual closing time of other Empire Stakes in order to give owners and trainers a closer approximation of their chances and the fitness of 00,000 Empire Cup Field Taking Shape Three-Year-Olds May Find Weights Enticing Brandywine Campaigners Are Aptly Named Charlie Givens Wins Battle Against Weight their horses before nominating. Robert Kelly, spokesman for Butler, says the Empire president is determined that the Gold Cup become one of the outstanding races of the world. And toward that end, will do everything possible to make it such. AAA The Gold Cup has barred geldings, which puts it into the category of a true breeders affair. It may be that Empire is just a year ahead of the times in so far as trans-oceanic air traffic is concerned. The airplane came into what might be termed general acceptance by horsemen last year, and within the last several weeks we have read of horses flying hither and yon and via the skyways, and within the few days a half-dozen owners have indicated" they would join the growing ranks of aerial shippers. This trend within our borders can only tend to become international, and when it does, the championship caliber of the Gold Cup will become truly established. The Empire management would like to see some West Coast competition, notably On Trust, winner of the Santa Anita Derby and second to Faultless in the Preakness and the Chilean-bred Olhaverry, winner of the 00,000 Santa Anita Handicap. But neither of these horses is regarded as a prospect. On Trust already has a busy schedule mapped out, while Olhaverrys owner, in poor health, does not wish to send the horse out of California, where he personally cannot, follow to see him perform. Fast and Fair, the expensive English importation of Charlie Howard, originally had the race in view. but went wrong a while back and has entered stud at the Willits Ranch. AAA Half the fun in breeding, to a lot of folks, is in naming the new and growing stock. Some breeders have discovered that it is rather rough going to find suitable tabs that already have not been claimed, but often, a bit of ingenuity will find no rejections from The Jockey Club. Such a breeder is Donald P. Ross, of Delaware, who races here under the nom de course of Brandywine Stable. Among the Brandywine horses under the care of youthful Buddy Raines are some of the most aptly named we have run. across all year. I particularly fancy the bay colt by Firethorn Panay, styled "No warning." The Panay, you may recall, was the American gunboat in Chinese river waters machine-gunned by a cowardly Japanese force long before Pearl Harbor. Another is Top Score, a son of Grand Slam Tremendous. Still another is the three-year-old Repeater, a son of Easton Come Again. A fourth is Keelrow, a two-year-old gelded son of Deil-Rinka. The dams name is that of an Irish dance, and Keel Row is a variation of that dance. Incidentally, trainer Raines has been instructed to concentrate upon fillies in his future acquisitions, said fillies to be proven and then, if worthy, to be sent to the spacious Ross farm. AAA Jockey Charlie Givens, contract rider for trainer Raines, is a lad entitled to a lot of credit. It was less than two years ago that he was discharged from the army after seeing 19 months of action in France as a combat engineer with Gen. George S. Pattons famed fighting Third Army. The day he was mustered out of the army, Givens weighed exactly 139 pounds. It was a long, tough battle back to his present 110. He was doing right well in Delaware last summer when a nasty spill and a broken leg put him on the shelf for a time. His work in New York this spring has been smart and competent, and when Brandywine ships down to Delaware a little later, we would not be surprised to see him get the opportunities which many top flighters lack here.
