Colinova Ekes Out Nose Score in Provincetown Outlasts OKeating Under Roots Bristling Ride at Suffolk Downs SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., May 22. Ralph "Buddy" Root, Merchant-ville, N. Y., veteran, whose riding has been one of the highlights of the meeting, came through with another bristling performance today, when he drove H. H. Prices Colinova to a nose triumph over T. McCarthys OKeating in the Provincetown Purse, one of the better races on a program that was witnessed by a crowd of 13,901. Oakhill Stables Gay Gino, after fashioning a smart early pace, was unable to maintain his stride and tired to be third ahead of A. Lamoureuxs Momo Flag in the six-horse field. It was Roots second victory of the day. He had previously outridden his foes in the third race, when Bounding Bow eked a nose decision over the favored Top Transit. Colinova responded nicely to his pressure in the stretch in the mile and a sixteenth Provincetown, which was negotiated over the extremely sloppy footing in 1:47. Early indications pointed to an ideal afternoon of sport for the hardy Suffolk patrons, but prior to the opening dash, heavy rains made the course fetlock deep in slop and intermittent showers drove turfites to cover throughout the remainder of the day. Momo Flag, former New England marathon champion, attracted most attention in the Provincetown, even though he had not finished among the "first three" for many months. The gelded veteran gave a good try, but once again was found wanting. He moved with a rush shortly after leaving the backstretch, but raced wide and then flattened out. Gay Gino, a campaigner who had been confining his activities to sprinting and who is known as a superior mudder, was full of run from the beginning. He splashed to the fore at the first turn and widened his margin through the backstretch. OKeating was the one to press the pace, and as they headed into the stretch he came on with fine courage, to supplant Gay Gino. Root, however, had preserved considerable energy in Colinova, and didnt begin to ask for speed until the stretch neared. He closed a good gap and after passing the eighth pole he picked up Gay Gino, then took aim on OKeating, who had taken over. Along about the sixteenth pole, Colinova ranged as a threat, and Root didnt relent in applying the pressure. It was only in the final stride that he gained the verdict.
