Eighteen Eligible to Pea body Memorial Calumet Has Trio In May 30 Feature Faultless, Fervent, Master Named; Preoccupy, Say Blue And Star Reward Also Listed HAWTHORNE, Cicero, HI., May 22. Calumet Farms Faultless, victor in the 1947 Preakness Stakes and the Withers Mile, heads a group of 18 nominees for the 5,000 Francis S. Peabody Memorial Handicap, highlight of the current Lincoln Fields meeting. Along with Faultless, Ben A. Jones named two other Calumet stars, Fervent and Master, suggesting that the Warren A. Wright-owned establishment will hold a strong hand for the one mile and one-sixteenth three-year-old test, which will have renewal here on Friday, May 30. While Faultless is right in the thick of a pretentious campaign, Fervent is being brought back to the races slowly, after undergoing a firing operation in Florida last March. Fervent, who whipped Faultless last fall, in the Walden Stakes, is generally rated by Jones as the peer of his Preakness and Withers star, Faultless, and the colt is presently in training at Churchill Downs. Master, a well-conformed son of Blenheim H. and Some Pomp, started four times this year, and he won his last two engagements at the Keeneland course. Another nominated is Dixianas Star Reward, a homebred son of Reaping Reward and Far Star. Under silks in the Kentucky Derby, Star Reward made a very bold bid for major honors in that coveted classic before he faltered during the last sixteenth mile, and finished fifth. Winner of two starts at the 1946 Churchill Downs autumn meeting and an overnight allowance sprint at Keeneland this spring before going to the post in the Derby, Star Rewards effort stamps him as one of the better prospects in the three-year-old division. Marsch Ace Training Well Star Reward presently is quartered with the Charles T. Fisher-owned Dixiana establishment at Hawthorne, and trainer Jack C. Hodgins expects the colt to be at peak form for the Peabody. John Marsch will be represented in the holiday headliner by Preoccupy, victor here last year in the Joliet Stakes and a recent winner at the Churchill Downs meeting. Training splendidly under the supervision of Burley Parke, Preoccupy turned in a nice trial at nearby Sportsmans Park the other morning, working a mile over the muddy strip in 1:49, handily. The Marsch colt not only is eligible for the Lincoln Fields stake, but he is nominated for several other important fixtures, scheduled for decision in Illinois this season. Mrs. Albert Sabaths candidate for the Peabody is the crack filly, Say Blue, who displayed plenty of class and gameness when she whipped Hubble Bubble, Kai Kai, and others of her sex in the Princess Pat Stakes at Washington Park last year. Say Blue, a daughter of Blue Larkspur and I Say, also ran second in the 1946 renewal of the Selima Stakes, and she was coming along nicely for an engagement in the Kentucky Oaks this spring when she rapped herself and had to be declared from that rich filly stake. Trainer H. C. Dodson, however, brought the Sabath miss along carefully after the mishap and he expects Say Blue to be one of the keener factors in the three-year-old features during the current Illinois season. The others named for the Peabody are Bernard J. Baxs quick King Bay, whose forte seems to be sprinting rather than middle-distance racing; Mrs. Emil Dene-marks Bullish and Stella Snyder; Emil Denemark, Jr.s, Last Stride; Joseph A. Goodwins homebreds," Song Sparrow and Ballas Girl; W. M. Ingrams Challemain; Murlogg Farms improved Balheim; Mrs. Elizabeth Oros Oswego Jr.; William M. Peaveys Jett-Jett; Louis Schlossers Milk-wagonjoe, and Siddons, a representative of Virden and Scott. A race honoring Mucho Gusto, an old Lincoln Fields favorite, will be run on tomorrows card. A ,500 allowance affair at six furlongs, for four-year-olds and up, it has attracted a field of 13. Among the entries are B. W. Smiths Forest King, P. J. Sopsics Rotate, J. Woodcocks Periair, W. H. Bishops Valdina Perion, H. G. Knotts Whosyourgal, Randen Farms. Per-aptera, I. Gawthorps Calliope, Gregory and Boyens Radio Joe, Mrs. Denemarks Karakorum, J. L. Oglesbys Mint Quest, J. McElroys Sacaton, J. A. Matassas Brown Clown, and F. L. Flanders Casey Jones. Nominations for the Peabody Memorial follow: Horse. Horse.
