. j Hollywood May Be Years Leader in Purse Outlay Give Close to 5,000 Daily for Rest of Meet in Overnight Races HOLLYWOOD PARK, Inglewood, Calif., June 2. — Hollywood Park expects to be the nations leader in 1951 in the distribution of overnight purses to the horsemen. This prediction was made today by president Thomas W. Simmons on the basis of the unexpected upward trend in attendance and mutuel handle at Hollywood Park so far this season. President Simmons said, "Barring any unforeseen developments that may alter the present trend, we expect Hollywood Park to take the leadership in total distribution of overnight purses this year. "Our average for purses offered for distribution cluring the remaining seven weeks of the season is estimated at close to 5,-000 per day, with an overnight purse distribution totalling ,500,000 or more for the full 50-day meeting. "This figure excludes our very generous stakes program, which, of course, is established long before the opening of the racing, season. "Our aim, as always, is to keep the proper balance between overnight purses and stakes. Obviously the horsemen as a whole are much more interested in the former than the latter, since purses affect all the horsemen and stakes only a limited number. We believe the horsemen will be pleased to know that Hollywood Park expects fcto be the highest in the nation in money distributed in purses."
