List Eligibles for Two Big Handicaps J „ ,S t£f jjlM j :RANK E. KILROE — Arlington racing secretary, released the final tabulations for the 00,000 Arlington and Wash-I ington Park Handicaps* Arlington, Washington Park Drqw43 and 65,Respectively Former to Gross 50,000 And Mile Event, 60,000; Name7 Horses Grace Rosters Final tabulations announced Saturday by Arlington-Washington Park racing secretary Frank Kilroe, for Chicagos two 00,000 handicaps, showed 43 star thoroughbreds named for the mile and, a quarter Arlington Handicap and 65 for its Washington Park counterpart at one mile. These represent totals for which final eligibility payments were made, and with a ,000 starting fee to be paid by those who go to the post for the big events, the heavy subscriptions have zoomed the gross values to an expected 50,000 for the Arlington Handicap, and 60,000 for the Washington Park. The winner of each event is guaranteed 00,000, with 5,000 going to the second horse, 2,500 to the third, and ,250 for the fourth-place finisher. The 5,000 awarded as second money is more than a horse would receive for winning in over 85 per cent of American stakes events. Headlining a dazzling array of stakes races in what is expected to be Arlington-Washingtons greatest season, the two handicaps will stand as the richest in the world, two of seven "worlds richest" races on the 67-day schedule. The rich session begins June 18 at Arlington Park. ,500,000 in Stakes and Purses These lusty prizes, heading the finely-balanced program of over ,500,000 in stakes and purses, have served as a magnet to draw the top thoroughbreds of American racing. Scattered through the list of eligibles are such top thoroughbreds as Hill Prince, 1950s Horse of the Year; the two filly champions, Next Move and Two Lea; Coal-town, Cochise, Oil Capitol and Roughn Tumble. Of the 43 awaiting the Arlington Handicap, 36 are stakes winners. Of the 65 eligibles for the Washington Park Handicap, 51 are stakes winners. Exactly 23 of the handicap eligibles are winners of over 00,000. Thirteen of the list have already accounted for one or more of the countrys early stake events this year. These are All Blue, Casemate, Coaltown, Cochise, County Delight, Johns Joy, Jumbo, Pictus, Piet, Roman Bath, Roughn Tumble, Sonic and Wistful. The heavier list of Washington Park Handicap eligibles indicates the added attraction of its mile distance as compared to the mile and a quarter route of the Arlington Handicap. The opening up of a top-value stakes event to middle-distance runners has been enthusiastically received. Each of these rich events will hold the closing day spotlight at their respective meetings. The Arlington Handicap will be run on Saturday, July 28, while the Washington, Park Handicap will be decided on Labor Day, September 3. Following are horses eligible for the 00,000 handicaps.
