Whirla Lea Indicates Her Readiness for Miss America WASHINGTON PARK, Homewood, HI., June 4.— Whirla Leas one length victory in Saturdays Lincoln Fields Marcia Purse, a five-furlong dash for juvenile fillies, added interest to Saturdays running of the Miss America Stakes here. Whirla Lea, the daughter of Whirlaway, out of Ore-the-Lea, by Bull Lea, took the lead near the start and shook off a determined stretch challenge by P. A. B. Wide-ners Miss Break, winner of her last start at Churchill Downs two weeks ago. Miss Break had won from Swell Dish in that race, and Swell Dish ran third Saturday. Seven of the eight fillies entered in the Marica are among the 41 nominated for the Miss America. Included are the first five finishers. Nominees for the Miss America include the following who have already won this year; H. C. Bookmans Fancy Step, Brown Hotel Stables Hadnt Orter, Leslie Combs Linden Lane, Mrs. Emil Denemarks Hi-Decker, Dixianas Rock Garden, Mrs. L. J. Hermanns Bloom, and P. Youkilis Elaine Ruth, in addition to Whirla Lea, Miss Break, and Mrs. F. Sharpes and Mrs. Ray Mullens Swell Dish.
