Eight to Oppose Royal Governor Out to Earn Berth In Sussex Line-Up Chains, Adile Also Eligible For Ten-Furlong 5,000 Saturday Race at Delaware By PALMER HEAGERTY Staff Correspondent DELAWARE PARK, Stanton, Del., June 4. — Mrs. Esther duPont Weirs Royal Governor, seven-year-old gelded son of Pilate —Feathers, will make" a final effort to earn a starting position in the 5,00 added Sussex Handicap when he meets eight rivals at six furlongs tomorrow in the featured Great Dyke Purse. He must carry 126 pounds, as compared to 116 pounds which he has been assigned in Saturdays mile and a quarter test. Several prominent handicap horses of the past couple of years are included in tomorrows line-up, namely: Brookmeade Stables Chains and the Mr. and Mrs. Walter M. Jeffords entry of Loyal Legion and Adile. Others named to compete are: Jess Linthicum and Laran, coupled as the G. M. Cohen-E. A. Nicodemus entry; Leading Home and Props, who race for William Ziegler, JiC, and Miss-Billie Roses Birchie. Royal Governor, who, in 1949, won two handicaps in three days at this track, and. wrlio earned 1,450 last year, has raced but three times this season, each time at a sprint distance. He showed a smart effort on opening day in. the Wilmington Handicap, coming from far back to be beaten slightly more than a length in 1:11% over a good track. For some unknown reason he passed up the mile and a sixteenth Brandywine the past week-end but he seems likely to contest the Sussex. Chains Returning to Competition Two other Sussex eligibles in the Great Dyke are Chains, who has been given a 112-pound burden, and Adile, who must tote 111 pounds if she participates on the week-end card. Chains, a record holder over the Pimlico track, has not raced since 1949 and must remain a question mark. Adile, whose only 1950 victory came over this track in the New Castle Handicap, will be making her first start of the season. Her running companion tomorrow, Loyal Legion, launched his current campaign last week and appeared in need of that effort. Laran and Jess Linthicum apparently lack the class of the aforementioned quartet, but at least they will have their favored six-furlong distance. Laran was a winner at Pimlico and came back to finish second, behind The Pincher, beaten two and one-half lengths. Jess Linthicum, following a poor debut, raced well in his only other start to be beaten a length and a half when second to Cacique in 1:11% over a sloppy track at Garden State. Leading Home and Props have little to recommend this season, for neither has been able to visit the winners circle. Props was only slightly more successful last season, winning but a single race. Leading Home, however, was a fairly shifty sort, winning six of 14 starts. Birchie, an Okapi filly, won two of 14 starts last season but seems ambitiously placed with tomorrows company.
