CONNORS CORNER By Chuck1 Connors BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y.,1 May 28. Jimmy Donn, the old Scot from Lanark which, in case you are interested, is somewhere near Glasgow in that part of the Queens Scottish domain.gave the boys something to chew over last week-end. Jimmy, always spectacular in his methods when it comes to Gulfstream Park, phoned up that he had tilted the added money for the Florida Derby to 00,000, which is a tidy sum in I any mans pocket to go out and buy dinner, including a few baked potatoes. The news was a surprise to the boys north of the Mason-Dixon Line, although there were some inklings last spring that the pot would be upped, but no one expected that kind of a raise. Now the boys in the stable area are wondering what moves Hialeah and Santa Anita will make. The talk last winter was that when the directors of the Hialeah course sit down at their annual gabfest, held at Saratoga Springs, raises in the stakes would be the big item on the agenda. From here it looks like that is a must to hold the center of the limelight during the lush mid-winter season. As far as Santa Anita is concerned, "Doc" Strub and his associates may tilt their three-year-old offerings just as a spur to keep the "name" sophomores trekking across the Rocky Mountains to the Arcadia course. Santa Anita gives away a lot of money during the winter months and, as one prominent New York owner stated, they force you to go out in self preservation of the bankroll. One hundred grand stakes today are not novelties in the racing scene. Last "year, for example, eight offerings carried that amount in added monies, namely the Arlington Handicap, Belmont, Hollywood Gold Cup, Kentucky Derby, Santa Anita Handicap, Santa Anita Derby, Santa Anita Maturity and the Washington Park Handicap. AAA Thirty years or so back, when officials of a track announced a 00,000 special there was a great todo on the part of every one. The first International Special in 1923 which brought the English Derby winner, Papyrus, to these shores to meet Zev from the Rancocas Stable carried that amount. Tijuana, situated in Mexico just across the line from California, staged the Coffroth Jimmy Donns Spectacular Methods Florida Derby in 00,000 Class Conn Errico Disowns Coffee Pot Ivan Thomas Visiting at Belmont Handicap with that magical amount. Well, whats the difference. Its only money, but it comes in handy once in a while to buy a couple tons of hay or a few sacks of oats, not to mention paying off the hired help. Its a tough poker game the boys are playing, and well wait and see what the next raises will be. AAA Johnnie Clark, master of Tattenham Corners, which, by the way, is part of the Keeneland race track where he doubles in brass as a tub thumper, -relays word that the mare, Les Abeilles, will be bred today to I Will.
