Apprentice Byers Takes Lead In Ak-Sar-Ben Riders Race AK-SAR-BEN, Omaha, Nebr., June 6. — Apprentice Lawrence Byers of Dolores. Colo., now holds the spotlight as the leading rider at the close of the Omaha tracks third week of its current meeting. Byer.s, who has been running a close second to Sonny Ray Williams, went ahead of the Electra, Texas, rider, Saturday. Byers now has a record of nine winners, ten seconds and seven thirds for a total of 81 points under Ak-Sar-Bens point award system of crediting six points for a winner, two for a second and one for a third. Williams, who has been up on 11 winners, three seconds and six thirds, has 78 points. The current jockey race is one of the closest in recent years at the Ak-Sar-Ben meeting which ends on July 4. Others in the top ten in order are, Eddie Burns, Charles lies, Thomas Osment, Robert Ford, Robert Mundorf, Gerald Gardiner, Jay Fishburn and Fritz Becker.
