1 : RUNNING OF THE OCCIDENTAL STAKES The first Occidental Handicap was won by a Chicago-owned race horse and a good one, the bay colt. Previous, which was one of the first really good representatives of Meddler and the property of the Chicago firm of Bromley and Co. In its second running it fell to the winner of the American Derby of 1898. Pink Coat, a real race horse and now the sire of other real race horses. Then Herbert won It from Advance Guard and came back the next year and won it again, defeating Carbuncle .and making himself the onlv horse that has won the Occidental Handicap twice. Last year Prisclllian took up 125 pounds and won from Master Robert, Dandelion, Firestone, Tourenne, Far West and Tony Boncro. It was his last race in a series of bri.liant victories unblemished by a single defeat, and shortly afterwards he was sent to England, where nothing but defeat has been his portion. Two of his unsuccessful efforts there were in the races won so decisively by the American filly. Mediant.
