Announce Appointments For Wheeling Meeting John Turner, Sr., Named Steward, Charles R. Hatton, Mutuel Head WHEELING, W. Va., May 2.— President William G. Lias, of Wheeling Downs Racing Association, today announced the .appointment of John P. Turner, Sr., of Baltimore, Md., as association steward, and Charles R. Hatton, also of Baltimore, as mutuel manager. Wheeling Downs will open on July 22 this year, running through September 30, a period of 61 days. Turner, a turf veteran of 33 years, has served in every capacity in the racing phase. He has been racing secretary on 22 track in the United States, Mexico and Canada, and served in some official capacity on 32 tracks. At present he is racing secretary at Bowie, steward at Charles Town and placing judge at Delaware Park. He was racing secretary at Suffolk Downs for four years and for 11 years previously at Rockingham Park. He was one of the original members of the first Hialeah official family, and served continuously until three years ago when he abandoned winter racing. Mr. Turner succeeds George Molesworth, of Pennington-gap, Va. Hatton, a certified public accountant, has served during the past three seasons as state mutuel supervisor for the West Virginia Racing Commission, and prior to that assistant to the state supervisor on Maryland tracks. Both Turner and Hatton will be on hand for this years opening at the Downs.
