JOCKEY BELL IN TROUBLE BRIGHTON STEWARDS SUSPEND HIM AND REFER HIS CASE TO JOCKEY CLUB. Sir Russell a Surprise in Third Race Single Shot Makes Good in a Stirring Finish Angler Wins Again. New York, July 20. The stewards of the Brighton meeting acted quickly today in the ease of jockey Bell, who rode the horse Bobbie Kean into a distant third hehind Aeronaut in the handicap- The license of the western rider was ordered suspended and his case referred to the Stewards of the Jockey Club. It is also rumored that steeplechase jockey Butt-ners application for a license will be held up pending an investigation into his handling of El Cu-ehlllo in Thursdays steeplechase. Notwithstanding that todays card at Brighton was made up wholly of overnight races, interest in the racing was just as keen as ever, judging by the attendance, which, for a Friday, was unprecedented!? large. T. C. McDowells improving two-year-old Dash-away defeated a fine band of juveniles in the opening sprint. The Salvator colt, which is one of "the few of the get of his renowned sire, actually engaged on the turf, gallops much like Salvable, Pat Dunnes brilliant racer of a few years back. Single Shot, another representative of the Blue Crass country, took the second race at a mile and a sixteenth by a short head. Her young owner, Woodford Clay, looked the, picture of misery during the trying twenty-five seconds consumed in that last gruelling-quarter with the result in doubt until the very last stride. Paritoulle, at odds-on and with Miller-up.-nppcared-a formidable combination on paper. The plungers went .the limit and were a dazed lot after it was nil over. Sir Russell, which had performed in-glorlbusiy in his preceding race, an affair for gentlemen riders, developed unexpected speed and stamina today nnd downed the former Keene filly and quondam conqueror of Tiptoe in bewildering fashion. Aeronaut, intelligently rated in front and ids superlative speed conserved, finally lasted out the rull mile and a sixteenth journey. The surprise of tlie race was Maxnar, which throughout the running figured the only serious contender. Bobble Kean lacked support, whereas the winner was backed as if the race was all over but the shouting. The stewards, having finally awakened to the fact that the betting ring as an "indicator" has no equal and U nearly always infallible evinced more than a cursory interest in the race and seemingly took exceptions to jockey Bells ride on the supposed contender with the result already stated. The California jockey will undoubtedly be ruled off the turf. The Whitney establishment started a pair of privately acclaimed world beaters in the fifth race for two-year-olds at five and a half furlongs. They were Fails and Fancies and Puritan Girl, surely an H-mated pair. However, they proved to be "lemons" and the ring was exceedingly puzzled at the hot tip which brought many thousands of dollars of easy money to their coffers. J. E. Madden turned an unsuspected good one loose in Fantastic, and the manner of her victory indicates the possession of superior siccd. Angler, assuredly a horse of stake caliber, showed to advantage in the closing race at a mile and a quarter. The Hindoo Alga four-year-old is now making good the promise of his two-year-old trials. It was mere play for htm to defeat those opposed to 1dm today. The principal topic among the turfmen was Millers ride on Logistllla yesterday. In one group, the members of which talked more conservatively than many .others, Archie Zimmer said to Sam Ilihlrcth: "Dont you think if you had laid back with Bobbie Kean you would have won?" to which Hildreth replied: "All I care to say is I wish Bobbie Kean had waited until I finished." Dr. II. E. Bowell, the California horseman, will make only a brief stay in the east. By the middle of August Ids horses will have been shipped back to Oakland to rest up preparatory to engaging In a Vmg winter campaign.
