MUD RUNNERS GET CHANCE RAIN AT FORT ERIE RESULTS IN RIDDLING OF YESTERDAYS CARD. Royal Onyx Takes Purse That Should Have Gone to Bellwether Creolin Shows Glimpse of His Old Form Runups Follow Three Finishes. Buffalo. N. Y. July 12. Changed track conditions caused by a heavy rain on Sunday, brought nltout the numerous withdrawals from this afternoons races at Fort Erie. Notwithstanding the. wholesale scratching, some rousing finishes resulted. The attendance was again large and speculation was brisk. The handicap, in which Royal Onyx, Bellwether and Dr. .Waldo Briggs were the only starters, resulted in one of the most spirited struggles witnessed during the meeting and brought with it some dissension over the placing. Bellwether had been the early leader, with Royal Onyx In close pursuit. In the stretch the latter crept up-steadily and, thanks to Mentrys lack of linishlug ability, got up to win in the closing stride. Bellwether was best and with stronger handling would have won by a fair margin. The steeplechase over the short course was a spectacular affair and resulted In victory" for Creolin over Dr. Keith. The former fenced In old-time style and showed the most speed, but tired In the stiff going in the stretcli and just managed to last. Prince of Pilsen and Dr. Logan came to grief, the first named by striking one of -the obstacles and wrenching himself badly. Dr. Logan, after once refusing the sixtli hedge, was persuaded to continue the course until lie fell at the thirteenth jump. Jockey Ilufham suffered a broken collar bone as a result of bis tumble. Several runups enlivened proceedings during the afternoon. The first came when J. 11. Wainwrights Stolypin gained a cantering victory in the opening dash. W. J. Young raised him to 00 from an entered price of $:;oo. but failed to get the horse. W. Walkers Steel was the next victim. He was entered for . but Guy Gray, the Oklahoma horseman, figured him worth ,000 and became bis owner at that price. Dispute, the winner of the following race, was entered at 00 and William Walker bid him up 00. but the horse, was nrotected and re-tained Ben K. Sleet, which ran disappointingly in his previous race here, made a show of his opponents ;l2,,?X-3n,1 ,u"a8 the easiest winner of the afternoon. fmnlfoclosing race Hooray had scant opposition and won well in hand. -r A consignment of eight horses, the property of J. L. Seagram, passed through here en route to Saratoga from Toronto. C. T. Patterson arrived today with Carew and others of bis string. He reports that the once useful racer, Kercheval. has leeu tired in his forelegs and will not be in training until fall. There is considerable speculation here on the respective merits of Olambala and Detective, both or which are considered certain starters in the Lawrence Realization Stakes. The Liatonia contingent are taking the Olambala end. while the Canadians are loyal to Detective. Joe Yeager is among those fancy ng Detective. He has bet 00 at evens that Detective will lmisli in front of Olambala. Bob lucker took the Olambala end. Musgrave will have the mount on Olambala. Edward Corrigan was an arrival today from Chicago, and was kept busy shaking hands with numerous acquaintances.
