BAYARD 0 IS THE ST. XEGER FAVORITE. t . j Some Speculation Over the Great Race at Doncaster a English Figures and News. ; I London. Eng.. July 2. Although the running of the St. Leger does not take place until September K some desultory wagering has served to establish J prices about the horses now deemed most likely to figure at the finish of the last of the years classics. Bayardos magnificent performance in the Sandring- 1 ham Stakes at Sundown Park. In which Louviers ran unplaced, has served to engender a widespread 1 belief that Mr. Fairie.s colt has regained his invincible form as a two-year-old and has had the effect of making him the favorite for the big Don-caster race at 2 to 1. while 5 to 2 has been laid against the Derby winner. Minoru. After the Derby a belief was entertained by many that William the i .Fourth would have won It, had he not been a ground loser in the unfortunate accident that put Sir Martin out of the running and predictions were not , infreqnent to the effect that lie would win the St. Leger. But his poor showing in the Grand Prix j de Paris has largely dispelled this impression and lie 4 lias commanded but weak support at 7 to 1. As for v Louviers it Is pointed out that he is not good in j deep going, such as prevailed when he ran unplaced j to Bayardo at Sundown Park, and that he will do j much better at Doncaster if the going is hard. How- , ever that may be. 10 to 1 has been laid against him, at which price lie has had considerable back- j ing. Minoru is perfectly well and the elevation of i Bayardo into favoritism over him is simply a rever- sion to their two-year-old form, on which Bayardo would hold him easily safe. No other candidate . lias been backed, although 154 three-year-olds are j still eligible. However, nunilicrs do not count and i such events must always come down to a few selected ones, the trend of St. Leger opinion at present being plainly indicated in such wagering as l has taken place. King Edward Is far in the lead of the owners to win ,000 or more during the present season. March 22 to July 1. which are shown In the table below: Owner. Horses. Races. Won.
