, j , ; i , i 1 , POWERS IS PLEASING THE EASTERNERS. New York, July 12. Jockey V. Powers is winning new followers on the metropolitan tracks with each passing day. Local race-goers are convinced that Powers is without a peer in tlie saddle at present. Tlie Sun says of his work: "Powers is a natural horseman. He is coal-headed, conscientious and honest. He won his spurs in the west, but was always anxious to show his skill on the metropolitan tracks. If racing was the old game when jockeys commanded high salaries. Powers would be in a fair way to earn 0,000 this year. But he is satisfied, he says, to establish his reputation as a star jockey with the belief that t lie-days of prosperity will come back and reward him for ids work. Close observers say that Powers will prove to be one of the best riders that the American turf lias ever developed. E. Dugan had It all his own way until Powers begun riding here a few weeks ago, but he has met his master."
