110000 FOR THE FINN J E Madden and Jones Brothers Sell The Finn to W R Coe Record Price for Stallion in This Country Son of Ogden Al ¬ ready Success in Stud NEW YORK N T February 8 One of the most notable thoroughbred transactions of many a day was consummated in New York this morning when John E Madden and Montfort Jones and B B Jones sold the stallion The Finn to W R Coe for 5110000 There has been a lively competition for the black son of Ogden and Livonia for a con ¬ siderable time and it w = s only with great reluctance that the Jones brothers could be induced to sell Mr Madden who bred The Finn had disposed of a half interest to the Jones brothers in the sterling young stock horse and with their expanding breeding operations at the Audley Farm in Virginia they were desirous of retaining him Fin ¬ ally after many conferences they agreed to accept the offer of Mr Coe CoeThis This price sets a new record for an Ameri ¬ can sire bought only for stock purposes There have been higher prices paid but not for a thoroughbred stock horse Xha was through racing The Finn was brought to the races by Mr Madden in 1914 but did his best as a three and fouryearold fouryearoldMISHAP MISHAP IN FUTURITY FUTURITYIt It was late in his twoyear cM year that Madden sold The Finn to Louis Winans the American sportsman who raced in England He started in the interest of Mr Winans in the Futurity In that race which was won by Trojan The Finn was one of the choices He was crowded into the fence in the last eighth when making what appeared to be a winning move and Kederis who was rid ¬ ing was unseated unseatedIn In this connection it might be said that there was another Winans purchase from Madden also a son of Ogden that met with the same disaster That one was Sir Martin He fell in the running of the Epsom Derby and even the English critics were almost unanimous in the opinion that Sir Martin would have been the winner but for his un ¬ fortunate mishap mishapThe The Finn was so badly cut up by his acci ¬ dent in the Futurity that he was unfit to ship abroad and Mr Winans was not asked to take the colt over That is how he was saved to this country Then followed the sale to the late Mr Hallenbeck during the war as has already been told toldAt At the close of his racing career he was purchased back by Mr Madden from the Hallenbeck estate and he has since proven himself a tremendously successful stock horse horseAMONG AMONG LEADING SIRES SIRESLast Last year The Finn took his place among the first twenty American sires and his rec ¬ ord in the stud is truly remarkable when it is considered that with only thirteen per ¬ formers the total winnings reached 103231 Among the most notable of his produce are Oceanic KaiSang Bud Lerner and Zev ZevIn In making this sale Mr Madden is fol ¬ lowing along the lines that he has pursued with such notable success that has kept him at the top of the list of American breeders for six consecutive years While he has held his position as foremost breeder he has sold a greater number of good horses than any other breeder and he is still able to retain his high place in the breeding world Each year Hamburg Place lias sent sterling colts and fillies to the market but there are few that finish out the season racing under the Madden silks And Madden will buy as well as sell He paffi August Belmont 50 000 for Friar Rock when that son of Rock Sand was a threeyearold and at once re ¬ tired him to the stud He has made several other notable and shrewd purchases but his transactions have usually been as a seller rather than a buyer buyerTO TO REDUCK BIG STUD STUDMr Mr Madden is sincere in his determination to retire as a public breeder and he con ¬ templates reducing his big establishment by sales until he has it of proportions in which he can breed for his own racing string There will be general regret in the news of this determination but Hamburg Place un ¬ der his scientific breeding operations has al ¬ ready attained a fame that has never before been enjoyed by any other thoroughbred breeding establishment establishmentIn In selling The Finn Mr Madden and his partners have disposed of one of the most promising sires in the country but Hamburg Place will go right along sending winners to the races while Mr Coe has added a stock horse to his breeding establishment that has enriched it indeed Mated with the Slcdmere Continued ou twelfth pace 110000 FORTHE FINN Continued from first page mares that Mr Coe purchased in England a year or so ago The Finn should have excel ¬ lent opportunity to gain additional fame as a successful sire sireThe The Finn is a son of Ogden the only im ¬ ported colt to win the Futurity and Livonia a daughter of Star Shoot and Woodray a Belmontbred daughter of Rayon dOr and Woodnymph It is thus shown that the pedi ¬ gree of this young stock horse goes almost at once to the best English lines Star Shoot for many years was the premier stallion at Hamburg Place and for five different years was the leading American sire Though dead his name stuI appcarel among the first twen ¬ tyfour of 1922 The venerable Ogden also has his name among the first twenty so it is indeed a wonderful record that The Finn his sire and his maternal grandsire all had a place on tle magic list of last year yearAt At the Audley Farm the Jones Brothers have for stock horses Sir Barton Ormondale and St Henry while Mr Madden still has Friar Rock Ogden St Rock the son of Rock Sand and St Priscilla arid Eliminator the youthful imported son of Sunstar and Marion Hood HoodThe The breeding interests of Mr Coe have grown to such an extent that he has di ¬ vided his stock between his Shoshone Ranch at Cody Wyo and Kentucky Polymelion Sweep On and Harmonicon are the stock horses that have been sent to Kentucky while at Cody he has retained Over There and Hells Bells It is possible that The Finn will be kept in Kentucky for this season at least leastThe The Finns stud record of last year was recently published in Daily Racing Form But in view of the big price paid for him Thursday it is well worth reproducing So here it is The Finn tlk h hHorse 1912 hy Osden Livonia by
